New Zealand businessman Gareth Morgan has proposed ridding his country of cats to save native birds. He says euthanasia of cats "is an option." He claims cats are natural born killers; and perhaps they are and do a service ridding New Zealand of invasive

Why do some people kill anything that either doesn't suit them or gets in their way...most bird lovers dont like cats, but cats are not killing birds just to anger Mr Morgan and other cat lovers, they are mainly killing birds because otherwise they will die of starvation. I have a band of feral cats, and i also have more birds in my garden than ive ever seen in anyone elses garden, if the cats are fed , then they wont wipe out the bird population, of course the cats must be sterilized, that goes without saying.
humans are far more efficient at wiping out a population of birds or animals than any cat is anyway, look at the extinction list.

I don't think this is going to happen. Some people need to try and stir up the pot any way they can for attention. Noted and signed. Shared.

done. Killing seems to be the quick fix solution to all. Why not look into all the pesticides being used, before these poor cats are rounded up and put to death. Totally sickening..........

This is one of those odd occasions that rises every now and then when animal rights and environmental concerns conflict. Cats are not native to New Zealand; they were brought there by people. As such then, they can only be seen as an invasive, alien species that threatens the native wildlife of New Zealand. It seems doubtful that anyone would suggest that the cats have more of a right to exist than do the native species of New Zealand, many of which are already endangered. There should be strict regulations enforced to require cat owners to keep their pets indoors.

As for feral cats in the wild, I honestly don't know what can be done to save them, given the threat that they do represent to native species. Perhaps some organization can conduct a massive round up and sterilization drive as well as arrange the building of a facility to care for all the feral cats caught. This, of course, will take a great deal of funding. Extermination is far more economical and efficient, but people who care about saving these animals should organize and fund a a facility that could remove them from the natural areas before any more harm comes to New Zealand's native species or to cats.

Why don't we start by exterminating one of the most invasive species of all, namely mankind itself? We far outwiegh any other species that 'feeds' on other species, what or who gives US the right to chosse who lives and who dies? Why do the media even listen and glorify such self-seeking, five-minutes-of fame morons such as this man?

In Japan, feral cats attack rare birds and foxes on Ogasawara Islands (bidding for UNESCO World Heritage Site) and are thought to be threatening the habitats. But, instead of "getting rid of" those cats, a non-profit organization has been capturing them and finding new homes.

This man is an imbecile and a moron and it will never happen. I live in NZ and nobody takes him serious BUT I must say must cat owners are very irresponsible here, cats live outside their houses must of the times because people don't like to have litter trays inside. If you can't handle the little don't have a kitty!

It is hypocritical and stupid to advocate banning and killing cats yet refuse to consider the severe threat to birds and other native species from habitat loss, agribusiness and pesticides. So this man cares apparently cares nothing about birds and their habitat, but is merely using them as a pretext to kill cats. Signed and noted. Thanks Cher, and thanks to Cristina for your comments!
