I guess I'm from the old school..If you don't want your cat on a certain surface, give it the old water bottle. Another way to avoid the scratching (although it is not attractive) is using aluminium foil. My one cat is a dirt digger - he will not stay away from my plants, until I covered the dirt in foil. You can do this on table, chair legs, etc.
