Just wondering, is the squirrel pox mentioned...is that communicable to people or other animals? With most highly infectious agents, squirrel pox is nature's way of building immunity in the gray squirrel population: those that survive will pass immunity on to future generations of squirrels. If it is true that squirrel pox only affects squirrels, then they don't need someone to euthanize the squirrels: they need someone to properly dispose of the casualties. On the other hand, if said pox were communicable to other species, then that's when more extreme interventions might begin to look appealing.

Killing American Grey Squerrils is offensive to Americans :(
Sciurus carolinensis needs to be on every continent, in every country. even find a way to have them thrive in Antarctica! then dump Sciurus vulgaris in Japan, the Galapogos, New Zealand, Brazil and they won't go extinct!
