No, seriously. I recently started supporting the very places I had always despised.

Very hard to face the harsh reality but these shelters are necessary. I work at two shelters and I do what you don't want to think about. Don't blame me! I will guarantee you one thing ~ these unfortunate creatures experience gentleness and TLC. In my hands they experience love that some of them have never known.

Until governments face the reality that there are too many unwanted pets in all parts of the world then there will be these overloaded shelters Why do all governments turn a blind eye to these places instead of starting to do something like having compusory speying and neutering These poor animals dont ask to be born owned by irresponsible people then dumped The people are not responsible so when that happens then the government has to make the rules as the people cannot be trusted to care for their animals and let them have litters when they are not wanted Its so sad for these animals they dont ask to be born

noted thanks Cher

Unfortunately, kill shelters are the sad consequence of a lack of Neutering and Spaying. They should be a motivation to get all cats and dogs fixed, so that this sad practice can end, so that one Happy day-- they will not be needed.

Stop complaining. Go out there and adopt or volunteer at one of these shelters. There are so many animals that need our help. Thank you.

I am on the board of directors for the only non-kill dog/cat shelter in Union Co., NJ. The biggest problem with kill shelters is, first, they do not show their animals on the internet- 2 weeks and they are gone. These are killing machines; don't kid yourself. A cat would be better on the street than being put into a kill shelter. Dogs hang around longer.
My shelter has a great site. We work with PetsMart who takes in 10 of our cats. On the average, we adopt out 65-75 cats a quarter; dogs, 2-5. These animals are with us for their lifetime, and if something happens, there is a lifetime return.
When we are low on cats, we go to kill shelters who are very glad to give up their animals. This is my point - kill shelters do not care as much as non-kill shelters.

i have worked at shelters, but they were no-kill. i have to disagree with most of you. i HATE kill shelters. what IS needed is MORE NO-KILL shelters. such beautiful, loving animals' lives are being destroyed every 3 seconds. thank you, sorry, cher.

We all need to be responsible pet families. I know it happens...kitty gets pregnant, but why send babies to the shelter? Try to adopt them out first. Be sure to interview future families. My cat was adopted from a family that rescued strays and pregnant ones. We now have a baby of our own whom we love dearly. Through a friend we found her. Six years later...she's the love of our home :")

thanks for the article. If it gets people to talk about the issue, maybe some solutions can be found.

I understand the sad necessity for kill shelters since there are more animals than homes. All I ask of them is that they hire staff motivated by compassion, not by money. Staff at the kill shelter where I volunteered from 1999 to 2007 were there for the pay cheque. Animals were not shown the kindness they could so easily have been shown. They were not promoted for adoption as much as they could have been. I witnessed abuses and neglect that I won't even begin to recount. There was -- and still is -- no accountability there.

If people would stop being so irresponsible then there would be no need for any shelters!
