So, What Actually Happens To Everything You Recycle?

Is recycling plastic after every use in one bin, paper in another and wet waste in a third, worth it? When your trash man picks up your garbage where do all the recyclables really go? Makes you wonder if they go to a recycling and remanufacturing company

We have to take our stuff directly to the recycling center so I know it makes it that far at least. We also donate as much as possible. Like old cell phones to the local women's crisis center where they are programmed for 911 calls and given to the women.

Interesting. Thanks, Cher.

Unfortunately, in the UK (and probably elsewhere, also), a lot of loads are refused by the reprocessing plants because of contamination; the majority's efforts are wasted because of a selfish, lazy few who toss the wrong items into their recycling bins.

I am so glad that recycling is being promoted more and more and there has been a lot of co-operation by the public. However, I still think that we need to step up the campaign against the excessive use of paper for items such as flyers, pamphlets etc. Thanks for sharing!

Um, glass breaks. Does that mean that when I put a glass container in the recycle and it breaks, the company refuses it?

I have often wondered if all the stuff we put in with the recyclables is every actually recycled. We take our recyclables and garbage to the dump ourselves as it's much cheaper that way. Our local landfill has just changed now so that everything gets put in one huge container...so I am very suspicious. The man at the dump said it was making it "easier"...hmmm ???

I was just talking to my stepdad about this a few days ago. He wants to stop recycling and definitely stop organizing the recyclables into sections because he saw that they are all being put in the same truck.

I think it is best to take them to the recycling place yourself.

Noted. I live in small town Alberta, Canada. All plastic bottles, pop cans and tetra packs are charged a nominal fee when you buy the product, and when you return to recycling bottle depot you get your 5,10 or 20 cents back.
Glass bottles have to put in a container, mark your container if you want to keep. They and all large pieces of cardboard (cut down) and taken on pick up day of blue bags which you put all newsprint, boxes, colored paper, etc. Real garbage (if you don't compost) is put in a bin and picked up every week which goes to the dump, and in the spring until first week Nov. all grass clippings, branches, leaves are put in bin and collected every 2nd week and they are composted and then compost is sold (sometimes free) to people of the town and area. All electronics - phones, old TV's. computers etc are taken into a place in the city where they are broken down into different parts and then recycled. Old paint, mosquito repellent containers etc are collected twice a year.
Not a lot goes to the dump except for furniture that people could have given to the needy, and appliances which are stripped down. old metal is worth money.
