Future thinking - that's the way to go!

Building a bridge in the 21st century must be done better and differently than it was done in the past. As we develop plans to build a modern bridge over the Columbia River, we must reflect our understanding of global warming and our dedication to salmon preservation. The Columbia River Crossing (CRC) Bridge should illustrate our best design response to difficult conditions. It should be green and multi-modal. It should have light rail, bicycle, and pedestrian service to balance the car and truck capacity. The CRC Bridge will have a massive carbon footprint, and we need to mitigate it with green design.

It's the simple concepts we seem to miss, or can't imagine.

A brilliant plan that could and should be the model for all new bridges from Maine to California and Seattle to Key West.

I also flagged them on all of Cher's posts-no use on a Sunday.
This is a real challenge to constructors and that green park roof is great! So many different purposes and aspects need to be considered and this project seems to cover them all just perfectly. Hope they can pay for it!
Thx!

Nice enough idea, but if the width of the river was actually known to the writer, they'd realize how unreasonable the cost of such a project would be, not to mention the fact that the "frosty dome of Mt. St. Helens" can't be seen from there except on a very rare, VERY clear day. Even Mt. Hood, which is far closer can't be seen from I-5 very often.

The ONLY reason a new bridge needs to be built across The Columbia is because the present one which is now I-5 has a drawspan which must be opened to allow tall vessels to pass. It causes huge traffic jams. The present bridge has been there for decades and if it had been built like a suspension bridge in the first place, it would be "workable", but if you've ever gotten stuck in traffic during rush hour on that stretch of freeway, the back up can be 10 miles or so. Many people live in Vancouver and work in Portland, so the effects of such back-ups are enormous.
