Dorado, a 5-year-old dog running in this year's Iditarod race, died during severe weather on March 15 in Unalakleet, Alaska. According to news reports, Dorado was left outdoors unattended after his musher, Paige Drobny, "dropped" him from her sled team

I knew when I first read this story on a different site, there was something not right!! Sled dogs, just like greyhound racing dogs, are just totally neglected and even discarded (thrown in the woods to fend for themselves) when the races are over. In another article during the races, there was a photo of one of the owners hugging and kissing her dog - I almost threw up!! So fake!! Just like how the dairy industry advertises how happy their cows are when we all know the truth!! This despicable "sport" needs to end!!

When sled dogs were used for actual transportation and people were dependent on them, then people also took care of them for their own sakes. Now, however, that it is a "sport" only, winning and money are far more important. If the laws have not changed to reflect this, then they need to.

Please don't support dog racing with greyhounds, or dog sledding (or horse racing for that matter!) The animals are tools to make money- and are killed or discarded when no longer profitable.

For every action there is a reaction. According to the law of karma, if we cause pain and suffering to other living beings, we must endure pain and suffering in return, both individually and collectively. We reap what we sow, in this life and the next, for nature has her own justice. No one can escape the law of karma.

Thank you, Cher, I have signed and sent a note to Mr. Earthman. I have been always against this brutal event and the crazed, obsessed people who participate in it at the expense of these beautiful, precious animals. This story just breaks my heart, and I hope that Paige Drobny will pay dearly for killing this dog. Her actions are totally inexcusable and disgusting, and she is a disgusting excuse for a human being.

This is unacceptable, The dog was at safety point, bad weather grounded planes unable transport dogs out, 123 dogs had been left by the mushers due concern of their team, The owner of the dog is under great duress due to the lost of one of her "family"members. The majority of dogs were indoors but 2 dozen were housed behind the building in hopes of protecting them from the winds. It saddens me a loss of Dorado, it is unacceptable. I still support working teams and their guides.

no dogs should be left abandoned. It is the responsibility of the owner to care for its property. There should be a plan in place for this type of endeavors if something is not right and owner must leave the race. Darn, this eats me alive!!!

Betty Kelly (4)
Saturday March 23, 2013, 11:50 am
The person responsible for this dogs death should be charged with animal cruelty and have no more dogs. From reports of so much abuse of the dogs this event should be baned and all known abusers charged.

This was my e-mail

Your Honor,

I am writing this e-mail because I believe that even if a dog is not fit to continue being part of a sled team, he should not be dumped and left outside without food, shelter or protection. While sled dogs are strong and can sustain cold temperatures, this dog was in no shape to be left alone: obviously, if he was dropped, it was because physically he was in no shape to continue racing. If the dog was weak, why leave him alone outside in the cold?

The level of indifference that his human handlers manifested is appalling and disgusting. Over the years, there have been so many horror stories of sled dogs dying inhumanely coming out of this Iditarod race, it is a disgrace. People will stop at nothing to make money from this race even if it means to be inhumane with the dogs that pull them to victory. Yes there is no victory or participation in that race without the dogs.

I respectfully request that criminal charges be filed against Paige Drobny, the musher because such neglect should never happen. And let it be an example to deter others who think that they can get away with neglecting their dogs too.

I would like to thank you in advance for the consideration you gave to my letter.

Diane L (110)
Sunday March 24, 2013, 11:19 pm
Sorry, but while what was done was irresponsible and the dog's death was tragic, it's hardly criminal unless it was done intentionally to cause death. If neglect involving animals was always criminal, then why not fill up every jail with such "criminals", since it happens everyday, everywhere? This is being addressed in such a way only because A/R extremists want to make an example out of anyone involved with the Iditarod and push for banning the race.
