Noted and signed ~ thank you Cher! I wasn't bullied as a kid but have dealt with my share of "adults" who are bullies. Stop bullying kids and hopefully they'll be the better for it.

I was bullied as a kid, and I do not think that signing petitions will change things. Some parents raise their kids to be bullies, either by being bullies to their kids, by bullying each other, or by teaching their kids that htey are better than others. Bullying is a part of the natural world - it happens in nearly every species.
It sucks, but I do not think it will go away.
Studies on rats have shown that as populations increase bullying gets worse. Indeed smaller rural schoos have less bullying. Our population is growing - this means more stress which cycles into more bullying.
We have magazines that bully others, making fun of their looks, so how can we expect different from kids?

At least there are anti-bullying laws now. As long as there is a discussion between parents & kids, victims can bring legal action against the accused. s&n thanks

You've taken the pledge to Words Hurt: Put an End to Bullying

Even the Bullies have been or get bullied at some time. This must come from the voice of parents and schools.
Teach children there are better ways to release anger and feelings of inadequacy.

I was never bullied but I stood up for those being bullied. I never could stomach cowardly bullies! My brother was very handsome & popular in high school - typical football player, up for Homecoming King etc. etc. but he always defended the kids being bullied. I'm his "big sister" and I took him under my wing when he was a little kid and taught him everything I knew. He has made me SO proud!

The more people become aware of the power of words to hurt, and the more people who take the pledge - the more we will educate our children not to be bullies. I am more optimistic than some of the other members who left comments.

There's a saying in some religions, that words can hurt and kill. Word are compared to an arrow, where once the hurtful word(s) are spoken to someone, the bully can later apologize, but the mental damage has already been done to the victim by the bully's hurtful words, and that damage can never be undone, and you don't know how a person is going to react. As with an arrow- once you sling an arrow into a victim, the arrow can later be removed, but a scar or damage will always be there and will never go away.

Bullies= murderers.

Both of my girls were bullied in Jr. & Sr. High School, with my eldest daughter quitting school because of it.
I had always taught 'sticks and stones will break my bones, but names will never hurt me', and 'also treat others as you would like to be treated'. In my opinion the internet has blown bullying into orbit, and parents must make sure they know what their kids are doing on facebook etc.

I wasn't bullied, I was beat up by a gang and put in a hospital at school at the age of 14. I was forced to go back to the same school. I became such an angry person for so many years, but I was always quick to protect those that were picked on, the elderly, kids and the voiceless. I will choke someone out if I saw someone get picked on! Not acceptable! My kids would not always tell me if they got picked on because they knew I would do something about it.
Bullying starts at home.
To many kids are committing suicide from getting bullied. Every city needs to come up with a plan on stopping this BS!

Signed, noted. My own take on it is bullying is continuously putting down another person or the use or threat of use of physical harm---and the person on the receiving end feels they can't fight back against it or do anything about it.
It's more than just somebody saying some hurtful words to another person. Hurtful words don't necessarily mean bullying IMO. But of course if there were less hurtful words in society it would certainly make for a calmer, nicer society in any event.

The word I think that is missing the most in raising a bully is Respect. Children must be taught to respect school mates, animals, plants, trees, environment, and the planet. The word respect appears to have no meaning to bullies.

I have been bullied my whole life, even bashed 3 times and I really don't understand what all these anti bully petitions are about. Kids won't hear about them and go "oh picking on the fat kid is wrong, I will stop and be friends with them" and coddling kids instead of telling them to suck it up and work things out on their own will do more harm then good in the long run.

Its great there is a push to make bullys less common, but they will always be there and kids who are bullied just need to learn to fend for themselves, you can't go crying to the teacher or mummy your whole life.

Bullies make life excruciatingly painful for so many and with the advent of social media the bullies can amplify the pain for the victims in a way that stigmatizes them further and deeper.

Adult people are bulling others and give that example to their kids so what we could except from them? And I agree with Brenda - some children are raising to be bullies & petitions didn't change their parent's way of perceiving others.... Maybe smaller groups in classes with less children could solve the problem?

I think there will always be bullying It seems to have gotten out of hand tho. It's to easy to bully on the internet and why is nothing done to stop it there?? What needs to be taught is Respect -Respect for others and ones self

Unfortunately, bullying is not just an issue for kids and teens. Adults bully each other as well. There is a woman where my mother lives who consistently annoys people with rude and personal attacks. This woman is 89 years old (although you'd never know it) and delights in telling people they are fat, or stupid or one of several other words. Another woman just about got up out of her wheelchair and ripped the throat out of the first one. This woman, like all the residents, has some form of dementia, so some of her attitude may be attributable to that, but apparently she was nasty before the dementia. People need to step back and ask themselves if they would like to be treated this way. Most don't, including this woman who is doing the bullying.
