There is a village in India where the community has a unique tradition of planting 111 trees when a girl is born.

Good news for both trees- and girls. There was a time the baby was murdered if it was not a boy.

That still happens Nyack, more than we want to know. I planted some tomatoes in honor of my grandson. I think I will be planting trees with some of my Eco-Warriors when school is out this afternoon.

What a meaningful way to celebrate the birth of a daughter - and improve the environment in the process!

Let's hope the female population rises and then so will the trees.

I'm so happy to read this as I'm aware of the mixed feelings that the birth of a girl brings about in India. What a good idea it was to bind the parents to make a commitment not to force the girls into some marriage of convenience. It's great to be able to read such positive news and I hope the practices spread fast to other regions of this subcontinent, as this could really make a differnce to the lives of Indian females. Thanks for sharing!

Let's hope this tradition spreads to many other towns and starts to apply to boys too, 111 trees for ANY child of woman born.

Great idea! Congratulations to the Piplantri village for celebrating LIFE - the life of the baby girl, the life of the trees, and the life of the village to continue growing!
