A Closer Look At Fracking

Fracking is the latest environmental hot topic, especially in the American North East. The discovery of a layer of natural gas beneath New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio has torn the states apart and brought out a lot of political tension.

I can't say the conclusion of that article is very promising.

Marcellus shale has changed the face of northeasten Pennsylvania from a dying, desolate wasteland to thriving communities. Unemployment has been drastically reduced as have taxes. The gas companies are improving roads, clearing waterways, and subsidizing community services. Businesses are opening and towns and resorts are re-opening for the tourist trade in our beautiful Pocono and Endless Mountains regions.

We have thousands of discrete wells dotting the region that are strictly inspected to maintain quality control. The most technologically advanced safe guards are in place to maintain environmental integrity. Air and water quality testing is performed religiously by objective third parties. There is an open line of communication with gas company representatives and town meetings are open to the public to address any public concerns.
So, maybe I'd feel differently if a major disaster were to occur but I have a lot of confidence that sufficient safeguards are in place to prevent this possibilty. And meanwhile, our residents are enjoying a 100% increase in our quality of life.

Noted. Fracking is opposed by a lot of people. We can't let money talk in this. Somewhere, someone(s) is overseeing a 25 year surplus of oil in the U.S. We're dealing with fear (mostly those not aware of this) and greed (name it). Why can't we live on the surplus for awhile? I'm sure there are several answers to this one.
