I just called the zoo and Lucky is still there and by herself. "Boo" is the elephant that died in March. Elephants are not listed on the website.

Some feedback about the zoo:

-The negatives, when we first walked in and went to the bear area, there was only one bear, and the other areas, to be honest looked abandoned and not being used. Got to the lion display and saw a lonely looking lioness. Hey, San Antonio Zoo, if you don't remember these girls typically live in groups called prides, nothing proud here. I firmly believe Zoos can offer great educational opportunities, but many of the animals looked not at home, because it seems that the designers wanted a San Antonio feel and not a hey, I'm a tiger and oh ya, I live on cliffs and adobe like structures. The Indian elephant dirt bowl, which again, 1 elephant, looked unkept and lacked water in the pool for such an incredible animal. I hope the city rethinks it general design. Plus if you can't house the animals in the right way, send them to zoos that can and focus on the ones you can take care of correctly. I'm not one for being a dog/horse whisper , but I didn't need to be with seeing most of the animals looks spoke loud enough.

I visited the zoo recently with my son on a school field trip. I was appalled at the conditions in which most of the animals are forced to endure. It was so depressing to see the majority of the animals in small enclosures and most were alone. The rhino had a tarp as a cover for shade that was too small to even keep all of the sun off although the poor animal was trying so hard to stay under the tiny shady area. There was another area about the size of a wading pool that I assume was to be used by the rhino to get some relief from the heat also. It was so sad to see this. The areas where the animals are kept is supposed to mimic their "natural" habitat. What a joke. I don't consider a few shrubs and dying weeds habitat for anything. I was so depressed and disgusted after my visit. I hope to spread the word and hopefully help these poor animals get out of these horrid conditions.

NS&S and I had to send an e-mail too. It's just so wrong. From reading Julie's comment the other animals are suffering too.

I would like to know the San Antonio Zoo's justification for their horribly cruel decision to keep Lucky isolated! Signed and noted, thanks Cher.

This won't be a popular post.....but what makes you all think you know better than the curators and keepers who love and care for this animal?

Despite what you read....many elephants do NOT like other elephants! We had one for many years who didn't want the company of others and had to be kept alone so she wouldn't start fights.

I repeat....what makes you think you know better than the staff at this zoo?

I know of one elephant, Pam, that didn't like others either. My niece worked with her for years, and she could never be around the other elephants.
But in most cases, they are very social and don't like to be alone from other animals.

I'm signing this because I DON'T know her circumstances. San Antonio Zoo will make their own informed decision.

Well before I jump on the oh how bad this is band wagon I would like to hear from the zoo to find out exactly whats going on and if things need to be corrected and if so what steps they are taking to correct them. I do not know nor ever believe that we read something and react with out knowing all the facts involved. Such as is this elephant aggressive? is she sick? is she old and easily injured by other elephants? Just my personal thoughts in this reactive world we live in.
