DeKalb County Young Farmers and Ranchers—a Farm Bureau group for people ages 18 to 35—has scheduled a "Giggin' for Grads" fundraiser for DeKalb County High School in Smithville on July 12. Gigging is typically done at night and involves "catching" frogs by impaling them with a multipronged spear. Headlamps are first shone into the animals' eyes, stunning or dazing them, which makes it impossible for them to see the hunter or the gig. Obviously, for any animal, impalement often results in a slow and painful death. Event participants are directed to hunt 15 of the biggest frogs they can find. The "heaviest" bag of dead frogs "wins," according to this Webpage.

Please politely urge school administrators to cancel this cruel fundraising event and replace it with an alternative that isn't cruel. And please forward this alert widely!

Can you make this a petition on Care2 so it can be delivered to all with a click? I will definitely sign. I currently have no time to write letters and email to multiple recipients especially since every time I do it they get kicked back by more than half the recipients' emails.

I cut and pasted the addresses to one email instead of sending four emails. I just asked them not to kill frogs because they keep the insect population down. I don't think they want to hear about cruelty but they might not want bugs around.

Dear Sir
Regarding the Giggin for Grads fundraiser for DeKalb County High School on July 12th It seems to be a very distasteful way of fundraising, spiking living creatures which is what frogs are to catch them It causes suffering and agonizing death and this should not be the way to show children how to treat any animals or creatures This is not a game but a sadistic hunt
Please find an alternative way to fundraise without being inhumane and cruel to animals
Too bad if they dont like it because being cruel is what they are

signed & Noted thanks

I kind of had a feeling this would happen: (PETA has occasionally been in error before )
Re: "Giggin' for Grads"
If you can, would you please notify the place that you receive this information that this is not a school fundraiser and has not been authorized by our school system.

Thank you,
Mark Willoughby

Julie, I already posted above what I received back from the director of schools, Mr Willoughby. He is not denying there is a fundraiser, however NOT organised by the school.
The PETA site does say it's that Farm Bureau group doing this but puts the blame on the school, ASSUMING they are responsible, when they're not. These folks of DeKalb County Young Farmers and Ranchers obviously initiated that fundraiser for their highschool.
