Recently, Israel has banned the practice of declawing cats. It joins other countries,- Australia, Brazil, United Kingdom, Finland, Estonia, Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland and Austria. It's time for the United States to ban this inhumane practice

Declawing cats involves the amputation at the first knuckle. Imagine each of your fingers being an inch shorter --- the pain, the frustration of trying to do ordinary tasks. So why would you declaw a cat?

So signed!

No, I can't sign this petition either. I DON'T believe declawing should be *banned* when there are going to be obvious exceptions and special circumstances. If a veterinarian knows the owner well, the owner has a history of providing good care, the veterinarian feels assured that the owner has exhausted every other option, it should be at his discretion to elect to declaw. The owner may have no choice but to surrender the cat, the cat can't be rehomed because the problem will only continue, and when the cat arrives at the shelter I can't ethically place the cat for adoption.
Declawing is NOT the hideous, barbaric, painful, crippling monster that humaniacs would have you believe.
I have assisted in many declaw procedures, I've monitored the cat's recovery, and I've followed up with the owner at home and in the office. If I had seen a cat that exhibited pain or was unduly stressed, believe me, I
would have been hollering loud and clear.

anybody watch "my cat from hell" last week? declawing throws all joints in the body off balance & can cause skeletal problems throughout the rest of the body.

In truth it is not nice to think that a person who is supposed to love the own cat can accept this practice
If a person loves their cat will have to accept his behavior is good or bad.

Just as an example, this is similar to devoicing, I'm an animal lover and i can't tolerate these practices, it's more simple to don't buy/have a cat or dog.

To Barbara D: There are NO obvious exceptions and special circumstances to mutilating a perfectly healthy cat. There are always alternatives to declawing. People who think their only choice is to declaw have not done their research, and shame on any vet or vet tech who has not told their clients about these alternatives, which are to keep the claws trimmed, to apply Soft Paws plastic covers on the cat's claws, and to place sticky strips on furniture to prevent the cat from clawing there. There are NEVER any sound reasons to mutilate a cat.

I should add that when President Clinton allowed his cat Socks to live in the White House, with all of the valuable antique furnishings present that needed to be protected, did he have Socks declawed? No, he did not.

If cats are to be declawed as to get rid of the "unwanted" use of their "sharp nails", shouln't then we "detongue" some people to get rid of the unwanted use of their tongues as to make them stop having and saying useless, nonsense ideas? Hmm... Maybe "debrain" some of them also...
