Signed -it is difficult but such a good idea as it is heartbreaking for the children especially to leave their pets behind as some spouses do take their vindictive revenge out on the animals.

This is a definite step forward for the many who STILL suffer domestic abuse...sometimes it's difficult for a person to LEAVE a situation like this having to leave their pet behind---not knowing WHAT COULD happen to THEM as a spiteful act!! I truly commend her for "taking action" and making sure domestic violence sufferers CAN take their pets also if need be!! God WILL bless her for this kind act!!

Signed! We need better laws- if people and their pets are fleeing for their lives from their abuser- get the frickin' abuser behind bars! Why do we have to wait for someone to die before we get tough on stalkers and abusers?

A lot of times when the situation deteriorates between a couple, the last one that is thought about, is the pet-God's creature. Thank you Cher for the article. I think it is so wonderful that a shelter makes that kind of provision.I believe that it would provide some comfort to both person/pet. It is a great thing to do!

I wholeheartedly applaud The Urban Resource Institute for this important step! All too often, pets are victims of domestic violence along with their guardians. Many women will not leave abusive relationships if they cannot take their cats, dogs or whatever with them.

During domestic violence and marital separations, pets often suffer too and need care. But also, pets help stabilise people who are in the throes of domestic violence. A little piece of unconditional love that otherwise is lacking.

In many abusive situations the animals are also being abused. It is important for their very lives that they are not left behind. Our local women's shelter has an agreement with the local animal shelter to take in animals who have nowhere to go when the woman leaves. The women's shelter also has secondary housing where women can eventually move and take back their pets. I have also known of child welfare workers who take the animals in the house as well as the children where abuse is going on. Animals are at high risk when there is an abusive adult in the home.

This was just wonderful to read. Hospitals and Nursing Homes have realized the health and emotional benefits of our pets and that animals can get through and comfort when nothing and no one else can. Imagine the added pain of having to leave your beloved pets with your abuser. If someone will abuse a woman or child there is little doubt that they would also abuse a defenseless animal. An abuser would look at the abuse of the animal as another way to "hurt" their victim.
I am so glad that there are compassionate thinking people like Jennifer White-Reid, Vice President Domestic Violence Programs at the Urban Resource Institute who recognize how crucial this can be in the road to recovery for victims.
Thank You.
