What is really needed is a law requiring mining, quarrying and other such companies to develop approved rehabilitation programmes for sites where they are working - either through contracting NGOs/ not-for-profits like Green Forest Works or by themselves designing reforestation & renewal work as part of their exploitation programme.

Your signature has been recorded. Much of this land is so fouled it will be years before it can sustain forest land. Bio fuels should not be an option, that would bring in companies like monster Monsanto and freak corn, with more abuse of the land.

it works like this : you should have a rehabilitation plan in order BEFORE any hole is dug in the earth......and in the end you should actually EXECUTE that plan.......or do I have it ALL wrong????

Signed. I was under the stupid assumption that a mining company was required to reforest what they'd destroyed. How naive of me to think that they would be so ethical. It makes me sick what they do to Mother Earth!

This is a world wide problem. Even our underground mines leave a trail of destruction and unusable land behind them. We have thousands of hectares of "Mine lands" standing unused. Surely these could be rehabilitated?

I have seen the coal trucks going up and down the mountains and I have seen first hand what strip mining does. It is heartbreaking. The Corporations kill the land and the miners. The miners just die a little slower. Both the land and the miners and their families are left with nothing but sickness.

What we really need -- & Congress REFUSES to work on for YEARS now -- is the 1872 Mine Act REPEALED. U. S. Grant should've NEVER been allowed near the Oval office.
