The Vancouver Humane Society is urging the Calgary Stampede to drop calf-roping from its rodeo program. It's a cruel event in which terrified calves as young as three months old are chased, roped to a sudden halt and thrown to the ground.

I emailed the organizers asking that they end calf roping and received a BS reply regarding care of the animals in the rodeo, etc., and that calf roping is a "necessary skill" for cowboys in order to "provide veterinary treatment for sick or injured" calves. They also informed me that rodeo fans enjoy calf roping and find nothing wrong with it.
I wrote back and and suggested it is more likely cowboys would rope calves in order to brand and castrate them without anesthesia. I also told them that the Calgary Stampede has long been renowned for animal cruelty. They obviously really don't care. I will sign the petition anyway, so they know how many people are sickened by this shocking display of cruelty.

As someone with experience in this area, I wrote a letter they are going to KNOW they can't respond to me with their typical b.s. talking points. Three generations of prominent Texas cattle ranchers and breeders, rodeo champions and one Hall of Fame rodeo clown, shenanegans won't fly. The first belt buckle won was in ribbon roping (no hog-tying involved). A picture of my dad is on my mantel roping a calf on the ranch in the 1940's. I have branded calves and castrated calves. Ridden many half-broke horses, you name it. I got to where I hated roping. I saw calves die and get terribly injured. I would cringe every time and cry when nobody was looking. It was wrong then and is wrong now. I can't help being raised the way I was, but even a person from generations of serious cowboys and cowgirls has the capacity to eventually figure out right and wrong. This is wrong!!!!

OK.....after adding my name to this petition....this.... PATHETIC EXCUSE....return email reply was just sent to me...and here it goes:

*Dear GUEST,

Thank you very much for your comments regarding animal safety and Tie
Down Roping at the Stampede Rodeo. The Calgary Stampede appreciates all
guest comments on our programs and events. We understand you feel very
passionately about animals. We do as well.

We realize that some people have different viewpoints on how people
interact with working animals, whether that be for food production,
competition or exhibition. The Calgary Stampede is where urban meets
rural, putting a spotlight on how we as a society interact with animals.

Tie-down roping showcases western and ranching traditions and skills,
and is very much accepted and supported by our rodeo fans. Cattle
ranching takes places in five continents and tie-down roping skills are
used every day to restrain a calf for quick medical treatment, known as
"field doctoring." We value and celebrate these skills as an essential
part of ensuring animal welfare and care on the ranch.

Large "herd" animals like cattle and horses respond in different ways
than humans when presented with different stimuli. The Calgary Stampede
uses authoritative experts in livestock behavior to tell us how
livestock are actually responding in different experiences. The
Stampede's Animal Care Advisory Panel (comprised of animal care leaders)
ensures we're making the best choices based on the knowledge of leading
livestock experts.

It is important to recognize that not all tie-down roping is the same.
The Calgary Stampede has the most stringent competition rules in place
to ensure we can all appreciate the heritage of this important skill
while ensuring animal competitors remain safe. We are committed to the
proper treatment of animals, and are proud leaders in setting the
highest standards of animal care that are now being adopted by other
rodeos across North America.

We thought you might be interested in this video that speaks directly to
your questions regarding fear, pain and stress on the calves in used in
Tie Down Roping.

We also welcome your questions on our new Animal Q and A website.

We respect and appreciate your views and thank you for relating them to
us. Your comments have been included in our daily report to Stampede
Senior Management.

Sure you say that you have all of these regulations and experts in the field to make sure that everything is done wright, but you cannot tell me that once out of the public eye that things don't change for the worst for these animals, I know what happens I was brought up with dairy farms all around ,and believe me there were things done to these cattle that I saw with my own eyes that was horrible ....
