We are playing with the future of so many spicies of animals keeping them in zoos thinking there are safe of extinction! May such situations show us there is nothing better for them to be free in their natural habitat and it is not the same however good the conditions are in the zoo's (whichconditions often aren't even acceptable but that is another theme..)

No known treatment, now that is discouraging.

BAD, very BAD news! CDV is a nasty, deadly, highly contagious virus and a viral mutation that attacks non-target species is going to have serious consequences for conservation efforts at this Center.
Unfortunately, it's most likely hitting in natural habitat areas also.

How sad this is. It is really bad news as it spreads to other animals so fast and will kill indescriminately. I certainly hope they can save the other animals.

Why were these animals not vaccinated for the virus?? Racoons have always been carriers of the virus as well as carriers of rabies, and this is widely known and not a suprise. What is a suprise is the fact that we monitor these animals in a contained area yet we fail to protect them from a virus that is easily preventable and readily monitored for outbreaks? Who dropped the ball?

Past Member, Canine Distemper Virus is species-specific affecting canidae (and for some unknown reason procyonidae). The current outbreak in felidae is caused by a viral mutation, apparently spontaneous. No one had any reason to vaccinate the cats for a canine disease, nor could they have predicted the mutation.

Very sad story. I hope no more big cats die.

Thank you Barbara. In a kind of a way, it was predictable that the virus might mutate, but certainly not predictable enough to predict a vaccine.

Somethin has to be done to save these magnificent creatures. Man has tried to altered the world to fit his greed that this is probably caused by man.

It's so very sad - the big cats don't seem to be able to catch a break anywhere. Let's hope that zoos and other big cat rescue facilities start vaccinating for the virus, even if they don't have raccoons wandering around.

There's absolutely no excuse for that. This is just pain negligence on the part of the keepers. They shouldn't BE keepers, then. Doesn't anyone have a sense of responsibility.with these animals? Poaching is bad enough, let alone idiots who portend to take care of these big cats.

This is so sad. My condolences to those who loved the cats. I hope you can stop this disease from harming any more animals.
