Of course, always err on the side of caution, but get rid of the cat?? Foolishness! The risk is so small, your cat has to be infected (rare), it has to be passing oocysts (2 weeks), and yeah, bluntly, you have to eat poo! Stick your soiled fingers in your mouth. If you've been exposed to a lot of cats you've probably already developed an antibody titer ~ mine's so high it could protect everyone in a 50mi radius.
Wash your hands. Watch your kids ~ they'll stick anything in their mouths.
The warnings really should say don't eat rare steaks and burgers!

lol Barbara! I taught about contagious diseases and illness's for about 10 years. The main topic was always, keep your hands out of your mouth! Feces and bacteria are everywhere. Be smart. Use your common sense. I taught people how to be cautious. I would get gross and disgusting, but I was an effective teacher :)

Have daughter-in-law who got out of cleaning the catbox by saying she didn't want take the chance of anything hurting the baby - at least I'm pretty certain that's why she's never had to clean the catbox since the wedding - three kids and no cleaning catbox. I 've had cats pretty much my whole life and would never have thought to get rid of any just for being pregnant. Thank you for the article - loved the pix.

Cats are an important part of the family. Anyone who would get rid of them so easily don't deserve a cat

Good information. There are so many scare tactic's out there, but no truthful answers. All animals know pain and joy just like we do. Don't give them a home only to uproot them and throw them away if you get pregnant.

I have a friend that had two children and she has had cats all her life and nothing bad ever happened.

I'm glad to see people are finally getting wise to this old wives' tale. Remember when people thought that a cat could steal a baby's breath?

Thanks for the important information. Gardening in soil that feral cats have pooped in is more dangerous than scooping the litter box of your own healthy pet (and wash hands too!)

This is a relief! Not really. I passed the age of bearing kids long ago. But when my daughter-in-law was pregnant, she had no problems! We clean our litter once and sometimes twice a day. I'm like Barbara D. I probably have enough antibodies for everyone within at least a frw square miles!!

AMEN to that. Like so many untruths circulating, this is one of them--like an old wives' tale.

good tips that may save the life of a cat.
You just don't get a kitten or cat ,then knowing you will have kids or whatever and get rid of the cat that is your family. That would be co cruel. It makes no sense.

Maybe these tips will ease the mind of someone thinking they would get rid of their cat just because they are pregnant.

Anyone would be stupid and just plain heartless to get rid of their beloved cat when there are simple measures to take to prevent any kind of danger to a pregnant family member.Ty Cher
