The following text will be sent in English to the Prime Minister and fisheries and Minister of the environment of Iceland in copy at the Icelandic Embassy in Berlin:

Dear Mr. Gunnlaugsson,

Dear Mr. Jónsson,

Firstly, I congratulate you on your new Office and the responsibility associated, on the other hand I would like to ask politely, to ban commercial whaling in Iceland. You have the chance to stop this cruel and unnecessary Hunt, which severely damaged the international reputation of Iceland.

The International Whaling Commission banned 1982 any resumption of commercial whaling and this moratorium entered into force in 1986. In addition, all large whales are strictly protected by the Washington Convention (also known as CITES) and all international commercial trade in whale products is banned. Iceland has been though formal objections to these international agreements and is therefore not technically bound; However, Iceland is obliged the two conventions and the will of the international community morally. And with views of the two economic pillars, tourism and fish export, Iceland should have an interest to no longer isolate itself internationally.

While the whaling is accepted by indigenous communities for self-sufficiency, this is not the case for commercial whaling. Iceland is a modern country with a high standard of living, where there is hardly a market for the meat of dwarf - and Finnwalen. What is particularly reprehensible hunting of Finnwalen, is the fact that the largest part of the fin whale meat has been exported in recent years after Japan was disposed of due to its poor quality and the missing demand by Japanese consumers. Now, it has been demonstrated that fin whale meat in Japan has been - processed to dog food meat of a species that was endangered by the World Conservation Union as strong, so as a type, which is subject to a very high risk of extinction!

Recently, the owner of Islands only fleet for the fin whale hunting, Kristjan Loftsson, announced to resume the fin whale hunt this year after two years break (due to the missing demand in Japan). This is totally unacceptable.

Do you want to really, that a strong endangered species being hunted, to throw away their flesh or to make dog food? It is a political decision, whether Iceland will continue this bloody business or not. Please stop the whale hunt immediately!

@ Ben and anyone else that has concerns about the efficacy of petitions

I too had concerns as to whether the petitions I sign make a real difference. But then I remembered something --- we are frequently not privy to the results of our actions for others. At the time, I was a youth leader in my church working with kids between 12 and 20 years old. Week in and week out, I worked with them, and I became very tired and disillusioned at times. But I was privileged enough to know on 3 separate occasions that I had made a difference. The first came with Russell who was very introverted , acting out and awkward to say the least. After 3-4 years, he settled down and was a great kid, although still very introverted. The second was when I was being transferred at work and had to leave the group. The kids were heart broken and showed it. One boy wrote in the card they gave me --- you always let us have fun, but I knew I was safe and you never let us get into trouble. The third was a few years after I left when one boy called me and invited me to his wedding. A few years after that, he called and said "Hi grandma!" He was a new dad and had named his daughter after her maternal and paternal grandparents, and me.

Rarely, based on the numbers of actions you take, do you have the privilege to know the affect of your actions. But when you are so privileged, it is truly glorious. We are a people of hope trusting in the universe. If we weren't, we would not get up in the morning. The other point is, at least we know we tried and that has to be worth something.

We can't all be on the "front lines" of an action, but we can do things like sign petitions, writing politicians etc. Do what you can and live in hope.

Petition signed.
