Marine biology seems like an romantic career choice for anyone who is passionate about conservation, but what is it really like to work in this discipline? Is it really as exciting as it sounds? Can you truly make a difference?

Any term that has "biology" in it, meaning science. I immediately back away. English lit, major here...

A somewhat depressing -realistic - assessment, but the issues are true of any academic discipline. Grant writing, meetings, publish/perish pressures, tenure issues... But you do what you love. As for pay, yeah it's not like athletes or rock stars or investment banking. Our society rewards the wrong things, so again, it's the intrinsic rewards that carry you thru - and hoping you win a lottery :-)

Find what you love and do it! Don't expect to be taken care of or have it easy. Work a profession because you love it. I've been a field biologist for 50 years and guess what I like to do in my spare time - hike, bird, watch wildlife, etc.
