Ask a Vet: What Would You Do If a Neighbor Tried to Kill Your Dog?

The owner of two dogs found rat poison in her yard. The only possible source was a neighbor. She showed restraint in her reaction. Would you?

I would probably feel like running out with a saucepan or poker but i would try and not do that and run as fast as i could to the vet

I'd install surveillance video around the entire property---that'd be my payback.

After I screamed and thought of every horrible thing to do to this person. I would first take them to the vets, but I would than confront this person, face to face and get an answer. Than I would contact PETA for help, and than put up a sign on every wooden post asking for anyone who had any information and than put up a huge fence.

Personally, I would never Rats they too have the right to live. Putting out poison is cruel and very wrong. Years ago we moved to another town and a few days later our cat became very ill, she was poisoned. This cat was a feral when we found her and she could never get use to staying indoors. I believe someone put out poison for rats but got my cat instead. So no cats ever go out any more, period. Please never put out any kind of poison for any reason, respect all life.

Oddly enough, I have such a neighbor. He recently let loose one of his dogs, knowing the dog would attack mine.
He dislikes my dogs, dislikes everyone in the neighborhood, and because his attempts at controlling everyone and everything annoy me enormously, I have responded more than once with disdain if not without fear. He has problems with alcohol, anger management and is frequently arrested if rarely convicted for domestic abuse. I ran out, when this occurred, and yelled at him, a garden fork and a can of bear spray in my hand. Winston was being mauled. (I sprayed the bear spray at the dog to little effect-I lived in the SIerras in California for years and had bears occasionally but never used the spray.) The drunk stood there and watched. I took a series of quick pictures and then grabbed the recently inherited shotgun belonging to my late uncle. I know nothing about guns but had watched him 'rack' the gun. It isn't loaded but I ran out again to my front yard, yelled one more time, then racked it. It made a distinctive noise, which got the drunk's attention. He tried to control the dog, pathetically, dragged him back to his property. I lost my beloved dog, after surgery, horrible pain and $2700.00 in vet bills trying to save him. I was never out of control; I wanted only to save my beloved dog. And I am unlikely ever to fire that shotgun. But for one brief instant, I could have, to save my Winston.

I've subsequently pressed charges against the owner, obtained a court order barring any contact with me, which will be of value only after the fact, I fear. I also found an aggressive attorney to sue this person. I've installed additional surveillance cameras, in the areas he might be able to access, at some cost.

I had lived in a place for about 5 yrs with no complaints or issues with the only neighbor. All of a sudden there was a camper parked near their place and some guy who was always sneaking around in the early morning hours was threatening to kill my dogs! I called the sheriff and two deputies talked to the man and he was gone the following day. I never got over the incidence and worried everyday when I was at work. I never had any other problems and lived there another 2yrs. I would definitely go after anyone who attempted to hurt or who did hurt my dogs.

Never been in the situation and G*d willing never will be. Despite my well-known, sometimes uncontrollable, brutal temper The police would meet me at the hospital and then follow me home. No sense in taking on a potential killer alone.

You call authorities and you put up signs in your yard, warning that an animal killer lives in the area!

Thank God I live in a neighbourhood where just about every home has cats and or dogs and we are all friendly around pet issues. If one of my cats were sick, first things first, the vet immediately. If poisoning were determined I would have to know with certainty who was the perpetrator. Then all bets are off. I'm usually an equitable sort, but animal cruelty is the one issue that could turn me into a raving maniac.
