What do food buzzwords like "organic" and "free-range" really mean?

I would like to see more transparency in food labeling. Food companies that have detailed lists of their ingredients on the packaging do so only voluntarily. They can only list "natural flavors" or "artificial flavors" but not list exactly what is in them. They list common allergens, but not necessarily uncommon ones. Somebody could be allergic to something not listed in the ingredients because the allergen is simply a "natural flavor".

Agreeing with Amy Fisher, transparency is sorely needed.

Very good question, and do we really get what we think we are buying?

It's good to finally read something here that is Canadian, so thanks for the posting. I learned a few more distinctions to keep in mind when reading labels.
