PPT must be held accountable for this destructive oil spill, pay full reparations to affected communities and the Thai government must take measures to ensure no oil company can put our oceans, our future, at risk again.

Sad - I was in Koh Samet last year - went snorkelling... there are large coral reefs (some beautiful brain corals exist here) which will all die because of this spill. The corals were already bleaching in places and already in danger of collapse, but this will do them in for sure.

The fishing here (local people) has become rather overbearing and was stripping the sea of everything... I've seen large tripple decked- trawlers go out with 50 people aboard (sitting on top of masses and masses of netting), so this was starting to be unsustainable already.

The people who will be most affected by this spill will be the one/two man squid boats, but even they number too many. The squid don't appear when the large fish are gone.

The thousands of tourists who visit this Island have also had an impact. The large hotels and beach complexes were expensive, but the infrastructure behind them was inadequate. Rubbish piles high behind walls unseen by tourists, and when everyone goes for showers at the end of the day... the golden sand runs black with overflowing run off from inadequate and untreated sewers.

This is (unfortunately) the outcome from a poor plan for protecting marine and coastal environments... everyone has run away with the greed of quick profits. Thailand's government has been busy improving living standards and an increasing GDP... but seems to have forgotten to protect the land it relies on for everything!

Sadly signed!

Just read that the spill occured several months ago... and the beach is now re-opened after a clean up. Lots of fishermen were paid compensation by the Thai Government...

Doesn't change much though!

Noted and signed. Oil spills bring such terrible damage to ecosystems, and some never entirely recover.
This is why I am so upset with the our government in Canada - if Harper gets his own way we will pipelines across the whole country and big refineries and tankers on both east and west coasts.Did I mention he is also thinking of a pipeline to the Arctic. Nuts - all of them! Our paradises will be lost and our children will never see them or be able to enjoy them. Thank You Cher.
