Container deposit laws have been used in other states - including California, Connecticut, Hawaii, and Massachusetts - and have proven effective. By providing a financial incentive for returning bottles, consumers are much less likely to throw

July 26, 2011 A new bottle recycling container is helping to divert glass from needlessly being sent to landfill. The Bottle Bin™ reusable container helps Ontarians to conveniently store, sort and return their empty wine, beer and spirit bottles. Glass containers are diverted from landfill and consumers are assisted to take full advantage of the Ontario Deposit Return Program (ODRP).

We have this in British Columbia and I think it's effective. Even those that end up in garbage containers are usually found and removed by homeless people, who turn them in for the deposit.

We've been doing this in Alberta for DECADES. Why is a country like the U.S. so slow in catching up?

Oregon was the first state in the US to enact a Bottle Bill, becoming a model for the rest of the world. Over 90% of containers are now recycled versus 28% in states without bottle bills. It also drastically reduced roadside litter. It's a win-win all around for deposits. Much less energy to recycle aluminum rather then generate new as well.

I'm not sure if Indiana has a “Bottle Bill" or not, but the people in our house have been recycling forever!!

I get so mad when I go to a party or a function and they do NOT save the cans or bottles from the trash Grrrrr...
