During the government shutdown, national parks, like many other establishments, were closed to the public. Somehow, oil and gas drillers were exempt and carried on their destructive and environmentally harmful practices. Hikers, families and wildlife

I can think of a few things to say to each of those so eager to destroy our public lands. Those things are not really for public viewing. Thanks Cher - Your signature has been recorded.

Ty Cher ... Your signature has been recorded. Please spread the word:

John Muir, Ansel Adams, Henry Thoreau, Teddy Roosevelt, et al with every 1st Nation ancestor are rolling in disbelief and proclaiming from beyond their graves to stop the stupidness. It appears to this peon on earth that the ego-bloated foolish have dumbed themselves beyond point zero... in their failure to comprehend with any itself on planet earth. What type of beings insist on systematically demolishing the means of even their own survival? Horrendous, maniacal, absurd...there are no words to describe this. . .

“There is nothing so American as our national parks. The scenery and the wildlife are native. The fundamental idea behind the parks is native. It is, in brief, that the country belongs to the people, that it is in process of making for the enrichment of the lives of all of us. The parks stand as the outward symbol of the great human principle.” ― Franklin D. Roosevelt, Fnr. US Pres.

“These temple destroyers, devotees of ravaging commercialism, seem to have a perfect contempt for Nature, and, instead of lifting their eyes to the God of the mountains, lift them to the Almighty Dollar.” ― John Muir, Sierra Club Founder, "Father of the National Parks"

“It is horrifying that we have to fight our own government to save the environment.” ― Ansel Adams, Photographer/Conservationist

"Hills are always more beautiful than stone buildings, you know. Living in a city is an artificial existence. Lots of people hardly ever feel real soil under their feet, see plants grow except in flower pots, or get far enough beyond the street light to catch the enchantment of a night sky studded with stars. When people live far from scenes of the Great Spirit's making, it's easy for them to forget his laws."

"We saw the Great Spirit's work in almost everything: sun, moon, trees, wind and mountains. [...] I think we have a true belief in the supreme being, a stronger faith than that of most whites who have called us pagans....Indians living close to nature and nature's ruler are not living in darkness." ―Tatanga Mani [1871-1967], Stoney, Canada [aka :Walking buffalo] Nakhóta, Îyârhe Nakoda

“I am losing precious days. I am degenerating into a machine for making money. I am learning nothing in this trivial world of men. I must break away and get out into the mountains to learn the news.” ― John Muir

“In God's wildness lies the hope of the world.” ― John Muir

"In wilderness is the preservation of the world." ―Henry David Thoreau

"If in a given community unchecked popular rule means unlimited waste and destruction of the natural resources—soil, fertility, waterpower, forests, game, wild-life generally—which by right belong as much to subsequent generations as to the present generation, then it is sure proof that the present generation is not yet really fit for self-control, that it is not yet really fit to exercise the high and responsible privilege of a rule which shall be both by the people and for the people. The term “for the people” must always include the people unborn as well as the people now alive, or the democratic ideal is not realized." — U.S. Pres. Theodore Roosevelt

National Parks should belong to the states, and out of the hands of the Federal Government. The Federal branch was never set up to include all the things it does. They have to much power... and the power is usually destructive.
This petition misquotes and skews but I signed, as I don't believe in the oil and gas and fracking companies destroying our lands. The people in those states need to band together against the environmental destruction in their backyards.

Here's another petition to sign...
"the Obama administration has continued to defend President Bush’s plans that leave this area open to rampant off-road vehicle abuse, proposed uranium and tar sand mining, and oil and gas development."
