Declawing is the surgical operation of removing a cat's claws by AMPUTATING THE LAST JOINT OF HIS OR HER TOES. Declawing is an archaic procedure and illegal in many European countries. Many apartment management companies allow cats, but some require

Declawing is an inhumane and cruel practice and, unfortunately, there are way too many rental companies or even individual landlords who require it in the US. I moved to a different town over the summer and I had a hard time finding a place that would accept my cats. The worst was that several of the so-called "pet friendly" rental companies in reality accepted cats only if they were declawed.
I was lucky enough and eventually found a place, but it took a long time and some people might not have the luxury of looking for that long.
It's a practice and a mentality that must be stopped.

Thank you for posting, Cher!

It's their property and absolutely their legal right. If you've ever managed an apartment complex you'd have a better idea of the havoc that pets cause ~ even if unintentional. I'm not at all surprised that this is a requirement. What surprises me is that they accept pets at all.

I can not believe that this is legal!
I have managed apartments and it was not the cats that caused problems it was the owners! Aaaah! I am so ticked off!

No cat should ever be declawed--it's cruel and often leads to health issues. S+S-thx

Signed. Simply require frequent nail trims and charge additional pet damage deposit- but don't demand declawing!

You bet I signed. Like Christine Stewart suggested an extra pet damage deposit and nail trims should work just fine. If I ever find an apartment that requires declawing, of course I'll pass that right up for one that might be more expensive but lets my cat keep their natural body parts.

Shame on all apartement management companies who demand such cruel and unnecessary practice!
Many of my friends who are cat owners have a beautiful home without damages and their cats are naturally not declawed!!
This cruel declawing of cats should be banned all over the world.

If someone says that to me I would tell them to "Stick it where the sun don't shine!"
I would never do something so cruel to any animal, mine or someone's animals!

I signed, Thanks Cher for posting, Toni for forwarding! I signed with this message: If cats were supose ro be without claws, God would of done this as he made no mistakes! Cats needs their claws for hunting mice & to defend themselves in the wild & against intruders. Leave cats be as they were born. Would you like to be declawed yourself & see how well you get along in life! Shame on those who would require this insanity on a poor defenceless cat!

@ Barbara D.
I am also working at property management - so I know the praxis. I am dealing with many apartements since 13 years but I had never a problem with cat or dog owners. Dogs and cats are allowed, besides that cat declawing is abuse and thank god forbidden in Austria! No property management in Austria would demand such cruel act. If you are a clever apartment manager so demand a bail money and damages can be offset - without any cruelty to innocent animals.
I cannot understand your words "... absolutely their legal right." - Hurting animals can never be a legal right.
