Pretend you're a dog trainer. Positive reinforcement ~ polite suggestions, encouragment, and assistance.
Negative reinforcement ~ criticizing, berating.

It's hard to get people to change how they have always done things. However, if everyone made just a small effort, the total effect would be great. Baby steps.

People change a) when they want to or b) when they have to. No one in California really cared about fuel usage, conservation or the like until the first gas lines and brown-outs. All of a sudden, a LOT of people were doing everything possible, and making huge strides in conservation. Sad to say, many people won't change as long as fuel is still somewhat affordable, and they can keep living they way they want.

Kami, sadly I have to agree. As long as energy, be it electrical or fuel, is abundant I don't think some people will make the effort. And even sadder, there are many who simply assume OTHER people will do the conserving.

People waste because they don't want to think about the future. Their fear keeps them from facing reality. Let's hope we can help them to see that the future can be positive and pleasant if we make the necessary changes now.
