Remember when Sheryl Crow wanted everyone to use only one sheet of toilet paper at a time? Maybe she had a point.

That was frightening at so many levels ... but realistic and hygienic alternatives remain elusive. Signed, nonetheless.

A hopeful note from the article; " At the Academy Awards ceremony last Sunday, the toilet tissue at the Kodak Theaterís restrooms was 100 percent recycled."

And it's worth trying a brand with high recycled content: "If every household in the United States replaced just one roll of virgin fiber toilet paper (500 sheets) with 100% recycled ones, we could save 423,900 trees."

I made the switch to recycled as my New Year's resolution. It's a bit more expensive, and not quite so soft, but it's fine, and the family haven't complainedQ

Interesting. I went to the site Anne mentioned and printed the chart of recycle brands. Will check into it. Thanks Cher

While using less toilet paper is a good idea: using toilet paper that is stamped by the Rainforest Alliance (look for the frog) and FSC (Forest Stewardship Counsil) is even better if you want soft + sustainable tissues.

Americans have been made to believe that they need crest, soft white toilet paper. I too use recycled and unbleached paper (when it is on sale-but then I buy both on sale). It is always recycled though. My tush is spoiled by being having me use ethical paper instead of forest destroying paper.

In Europe they are selling recycled toilette tissue, but I have not seen any here in Canada yet. It is more than time to get this changed.

Aside from the fact that I try to avoid buying any products made by the Koch bros, yes they are big toilet paper makers. Going green on this is great! Oh that bidets were more available in America. But it is not just toilet paper that needs to be replaced, paper towels can be replaced with old tee shirts, they do a great job and can be washed and re-used over and over. Kleenex should also be replaced with those wonderful and beautiful old hankies. I still have my mom's and grandmothers hankies and will make sure to put them in my purse from now on. Lastly, for some the foregoing may sound yucky, but if you are at home when you go to the bathroom and only urinate it is really not a must to flush every time. The other of course is a given, flush of course. I live in Southern California and with our drastic water shortage it is imperative to save water where ever you can.

paper can be made from hemp - a constantly renewable weed! Also Papyrus - we do not need to cut down trees for paper products! Harbor freight sells a package of 50 cloths for about $8 on sale - can be used over & over - better than paper products!

Birgit W. - not sure where you live that you can't find recycled toilet tissues in Canada.. I find it just about everywhere I go. Here is a guide from Greenpeace for the brands and stores that sell it. Hopefully this will help you find some.

We need to be more conscientious and aware of what we purchase and what the consequence of each product has on the well-being of the environment. Wiping out old growth forests, etc., because we choose a softer tissue to wipe our butts just doesn't sit well with me. Thank Cher!

WE should all be using recycled toilette tissue, and the usual kind should not be allowed on shelves. It is all in what one gets used to!! And the recycled will save a lot of forests. Also Kleenex takes a horendous amount of trees just fo one box.
Thanks Cher.

We buy only recycled toilet paper. Natural Value brand is very reasonably priced (this in response to the comment that recycled is more expensive).
