The very important point about paper: news, and cardboard is if it is wet, it is not recyclable. Dry it out if you can, then do so.

I reuse most plastic containers that come with lids. I also reuse plastic grocery bags. I reuse newspaper, too. Most modern newspapers are printed with soy based inks. When the newspaper is shredded it will decompose faster. The last time we buried a small furry or feathered friend, we wrapped the body in newspaper and buried it in the garden. The gardeners at the community garden use newspaper and corrugated cardboard as weed barriers. Because these materials break down over the Winter months, they have to be replaced every year.
