I did this to my first cat, and I cried when I took him home and realized he could barely walk.

My cat is not declawed - I provide her with a scratching post and pad, though I do occasionally have to hiss at her for sharpening her claws on my Oriental rug. Yes, a well-timed hiss does send a message to your cat! I will gladly support any state or, better yet, Federal law that bans declawing.
