I know that there are few things in life more gratifying for you than finding a good bargain or helping the environment. Well, let the clouds part, a flock of starlings take flight, and cue the angels: you've just hit the jackpot,

Some of my neighbors don't bother to recycle. I live in an apartment building and every week I find much to recycle or reuse in their "trash." I have rescued 100's of items to donate.

I love the encouragement to CLEAN UP! It's so good for families to bring children and teach them from an early age to love the earth and clean up after lazy neighbors. Kids ''get it."

Can totally recommend the BRITA water filter to make tap water as tasty as ANYTHING you can get in a funky plastic bottle, and even if you live in a small apartment and only have a balcony, you can do vermiculture composting in a regular storage tub and have lovely dirt your house plants will THANK you for! Finally, if you don't want to keep something, at least consider donating anything usable, from clothes on up to furniture, to a local thrift store. Many worthy charities earn much of their income from donations. It's one of the ways my local animal shelter stays afloat.

Nothing new here for me, but it's good to have reminders. Here in Canada the Diabetes Society has the Diabetes Clothesline, which includes having a truck come and pick up anything (almost) you want to donate to them for their thrift stores. It's more than clothes but there may be limits on the sizes of what they can pick up. They come to your home, which is lovely for me as I don't own a vehicle. I'm sure there are groups like this all over the place, who not only want your cast-offs but will come and pick them up.

Can you imagine if everyone would truly give a sh*t about the planet and would do everything they could to help and preserve it....I believe if they did, it would make this planet a truly "wonderful world." Thanks Cher for sharing.

I have been using Freecycle for several years, and it is great! I have probably given away enough items to cram a full-size SUV, including furniture, a Nordic Trac, books, clothes and even a bag of peat moss. We definitely need to move beyond consumerism and learn to be happy and fulfilled with less. You don't need a McMansion when a condo apartment will suffice!

For me, being green means among other things buying as little as possible. Just say no!
