This was in the longer article, though I think we all know what is causing this - pollution.

"You’ve heard of keystone species, right? The term refers to particular organisms that keep the relationships between the ecosystem’s other plants and animals functioning properly. Without them, ecosystems collapse—like an arch would without its center block. Well, as it so happens, when ecologist Robert T. Paine first coined the term back in 1969, he got the idea by messing around with a bunch of starfish."

I'm convinced that the dispersant used without permission by BP to control their huge oil spill is the culprit. Not only starfish but all other species in the area. Between radiation from Japan and this, the sea must be poisoned by now to all living things. It will be a miracle in anything survives. God help us all if the seas die.

Sad to see yet another species facing survival problems in the oceans of the world. Hopefully a solution can be found so that not all starfish in the area succumb to this plague.
