I realize that not all anti-zoo people will fit all of the categories and that all anti-zoo people aren't that extreme and maybe now people will be able to see how unfair it is when they lump all zoos into the inhumane category.

From a recent posting, sanctuaries (some) are no better or worse than zoos due to their lack of state/federal controls.

Agreed, Alan Yorkowitz. Also, for the animals nearing extinction, zoos are keeping their numbers up.

There are excellent zoos, good, bad, horrific zoos. Some animal rights people want to put everything into a black and white box and assume that if it is a zoo, it is oppression, terror and therefore bad because it involves 'evil' humans. Simply because an animal is in a sanctuary does not automatically mean that the animal will be better off, it depends on the sanctuary as all are not perfect.

Certainly there are some in the animal rights movement who even believe that having a pet should be outlawed and that all cats and dogs should be released into the wild and away from the 'oppression' of humans. That is like saying no one should have a child because some people are abusive towards their children or are not educated when it comes to raising their children. While some will say human children are part of the human environment while animals are not, they are missing the point.

Well run zoos do have a place especially when they are helping to keep some animals from poachers and extinction. Badly run zoos should be shut down. Zoos if well run are not in the same category as circuses.

Zoos are doing the best they can with what they have and if anti-zoo people took their energy and time and money and put it towards stopping the reasons we need to have zoos (I.E. deforestation, palm oil crisis, over fishing, poaching, etc.) that maybe we wouldn't NEED zoos but we DO NEED ZOOS. I agree with Allan Y, regarding some sanctuaries.
Thanks for sharing Cher.
