Decades ago, Maine's returnable bottle bill was hotly opposed by the soda lobby. They lost. The roadside litter, in Maine, dropped 80%, created jobs and recycled AL2, one of the worst polluting mining practices raping Mother.

I look forward to the day when corporations can no longer hold our governments hostage and petitions such as this are no longer necessary.

Here in British Columbia, we pay a deposit of 5 cents for a 1 litre or less plastic or glass pop or juice bottle, and 20 cents for bottles over 1 litre. Tin cans and gable top containers are 5 cents each. Milk and milk like substances (Silk etc) are considered food and therefore are not eligible. When the bottle/can/container is returned we get that money back. In addition to that, we pay 3 cents per container for an enviro fee which is not refundable.
