A nationally representative survey finds that the terms "global warming" and "climate change" often mean different things to Americans -- and activate different sets of beliefs, feelings, and behaviors, as well as different degrees of urgency about the

Personally, I don't understand the blather. Does it matter?? We're polluting the atmosphere, pollution is killing
life, and NO ONE can debate those facts.
So whether the climate is changing or the globe is warming ~ we still have to quit spewing crap.

I think Climate Change/Global Warming are the same [both have 13 letters!]. After reading this article I will use Global Warming more often.

Sorry, David, I find that a rather futilitarian attitude. Since disaster is imminent we should all just give up?

It's not easy to discuss Global Warming with somebody who is complaining about the unseasonably cold weather we've been having. I prefer to use Climate Change because some places have unseasonably cold weather while others have unseasonably warm weather. This past Winter we had a total of maybe 8 inches of snow. However, the snow would fall and there would be an accumulation of maybe 2 or 3 inches; but, it would melt away before the next snowfall. Not once did I have to drive on compact snow and ice covered roads.

I believe it was the winter of 2006/07 that we had one in particular very deep snowfall where I live, which is Colorado Springs, CO. While my non-scientific colleagues were saying things lie "So much for global warming," I was saying, "ARE YOU INSANE? We live in a high desert. Where did all this water come from if it isn't warming up SOMEWHERE, and probably somewhere that's going to hurt us in the long run!" Alas, I doubt I convinced anyone.

odd that some strategists are giving up on the term 'global warming' because of controversy while this survey shows that the term is associated with more knowledge and concern than 'climate change'

Tit for Tat. Global Warming is from Climate Change. What is so difficult about that.

It's quite immaterial what you call it.
What maters is, that people do their best, NOT to contribute to it.
To what degree, could be debatable, but, what is not debatable is the fact that we, humans, do play a hand in Earth's deterioration.
We should be asking, why do we want to 'shoot ourselves in the foot'?
Well, we know the answer to that question.
Anyone whose religion is GREED, are the ones. As long as Big Business continues to line their pockets with cash, nothing will change for ego-manical, selfish Teapublicans.

Susan Brownell Anthony (1820-1906) played a key role in the women's suffrage movement, said:
'I distrust those people who know so well what God wants to do, because I notice it always coincides with their own desires'.

What's so difficult about that, Rosa Caldwell, is that global warming (or cooling) causes climate change, not the other way around. Climate change is the result of global warming, not its cause. Because "global warming" is not only the driving force behind climate change but is also the more accurate term used to describe the phenomenon now extant across the planet, it should be the preferred term (as it apparently is).

I thought I remembered a deliberate change from the term global warming to climate change some years ago. It avoided the argument some people would put forward that some places were getting colder.

Well they are, but as Joanne Dixon noted above, it's because other parts are getting warmer!
