It was a tough winter for the elk herd in the Mount St. Helens Wildlife Area. About 150 elk died of malnutrition and causes related to the snow and cold that extended into April, the Washington Fish and Wildlife Department reported Thursday.

Too bad there were no wolves in the area to control the size of the herd, such a waste all the way around.
