The spirit of America has long been symbolized by the wild horses that gallop across its plains, so much so that the federal government enacted legislation to protect them back in the '70s. But now, the very agency charged with protecting wild horses is

Call the BLM they are taking messages for public comment. Write your senator and the Senators of Nevada, Montana and any other state that supports the wild horses. Public opinion is what got the 1971 Wild Hors & Burro Act which was subsequently watered down to mean nothing. Public opinion can make the BLM accountable for the original language of the 1971 act. Let them start charging the businessmen known as cattle ranchers a fair market dollar amount for grazing rights and open up some of the lands now closed to the wild horse. If the BLM had left the horses be they wouldn't have to spend millions in tax dollars supporting them in holding areas. Jeez, what a concept.

Culling is not a long term solution to this perceived 'problem'. And is there a problem with the horses and burros or is it a problem with us as humans unable to coexist with other species? Do not proceed with this cull - show leadership and compassion and work towards a harmonious solution that promotes life - not cruelty, suffering and death.

Euthanasia is not an option. The horses need to be protected and allowed to run free. Human Beings are at fault for taking over the grazing land and fencing off many areas that were once open for open grazing.

Hello,

Thank you very much for your comments regarding the Bureau of Land
Management’s Wild Horse and Burro Program.

The Bureau of Land Management is facing a number of difficult challenges in
the National Wild Horse and Burro Program. Our goal in the West is to
manage healthy, free-roaming herds on healthy rangelands; however, it is
becoming increasingly difficult to do so.

Wild horses and burros in the West have virtually no natural predators and
their herd sizes can double about every four years. As a result, the agency
must remove thousands of animals from Western public rangelands each year
to ensure that herd sizes are consistent with the land’s capacity to
support them. As of June 2008, there are more than 30,000 wild horses and
burros that are fed and cared for at short-term and long-term holding
facilities. It is essential to keep the BLM’s wild horse and burro program
in balance. Right now, the cost of keeping these animals in holding
facilities is spiraling out of control and preventing the agency from
successfully managing other parts of the program. For example, this fiscal
year, holding costs will exceed $26 million, more than three-fourths of the
BLM’s congressional appropriation of about $37 million for this program.

In addition, rising energy prices have increased costs. In one year alone,
energy costs for transportation and feed have increased almost $4 million.
It is clear the agency cannot continue current removal and holding
practices under existing and projected budgets. Neither can the BLM allow
horses to multiply unchecked on the range without causing an environmental
disaster. That's why the BLM is exploring options to exercise its legal
authority to (1) sell older and certain other unadopted animals “without
limitation” to any willing buyers and (2) euthanize those wild horses and
burros for which no adoption demand exists. We know this is not a popular
option, but we are at a critical point where we must consider using the
legal authorities allowed us.

The BLM welcomes your input as we work to improve the program and the
welfare of the West’s wild horses and burros within our budget. For every
comment to be officially recorded we ask you to leave feedback on this
program, please go to:

Thank you again for your participation!

Here is my 2 cents of what I told the BLM, you can add your 2 cents, use the link above.

Seems to me killing anything you deem unmanageable is always the solution. How simple minded. Trillions of our tax dollars are being spent to kill & maim and the American people are tired and sick of this. Some of this money can & will be spent to save our horses. This isn't about some dirty little secret you can keep hidden, it out there and the world is watching to see what the super power is going to do to save her own. And please don't tell us about humane killings, it's all over youtube the world knows the truth. If you think this too will past you are sadly mistaken. The American people want our horses saved, not slaughtered. I'm sure the Indian Nations are also against this slaughter, & if we all must unite and park our happy little asses between you and the horses, consider it done. Leave our horses alone, & no natural predators, Ha who do you think you're kidding with that one. Bears, cougars and the worst of all YOU.

I am making a large banner to hang up in the crossroads of the horse country that I live in with BLM contact info. Once in place I will contact media to come take a picture. I will also be writing to Dateline and other investigative journalist shows to see if we can get them to pick up the story. I really get fed up with fighting the same fight that should have been and actually was settled in 1971, you know 37 years ago.
