In today's ever-more digitalized world, we all have a tale or two to share about how personal computers have let us down: like how they refused to let us run different programs at the same time or how the data was so heavy that the damned device >>

WOW, what a great toy !
and with only 17 MW (does that include peripheral componoents and the cooling system it needs?) .. you need only how many Mt of coal per year ?
And I hope that the Japanese do NOT use their silicon-slave for what others are often/mostly used for - i.e simulation of thermonuclear explosions....

no *I* do NOT; quite the contrary. Just yesterday --((when I'd written and used a small script to solve (more precisely: numerically approximate) equations for the Lagrange-(1,2,3)-points))-- I --once again-- (whassgoodword) *MARVELED AT*(?) / do not find the proper words to express my appreciation for the development of HW-resources in my lifetime.

What has let us down, imho, is 2 things: 1) the 'quality' (ie. lack thereof) of the most-common SoftWare and the general acceptance of botch that comes with it; and 2) how-to-put-it?? the lack of progress for humanity, which the o-soo-great technical progress has translated to / come along with.

Maybe the new Colossus will decide to tell Japan to quit killing the whales? Is China building Guardian? Is IBM in USA building Joshua5? Is Russia doing anything? Biggest problem: Garbage In, Garbage Out.

Sorry but to me it's extremely scary. Many many problems are developing as technology moves us further and further away from how the human brain is naturally hard-wired (basically unchanged in structure or function since Man first walked upright). We need many, many interactions in the natural and social realms to develop into resilient, grounded, mentally sound human beings -- and technology is replacing an astounding number of those interactions with efficient cybersubstitutes. Thus, the world will slowly go crazier and crazier (like it already is). Mark my words.
