Special interest in child development? Somehow that seems incongruous to me. You do not help a child develop by mutilating her. Perhaps he meant to say male child development. In any case it is appalling and I certainly hope the Mayo clinic is not allowing him to perform his specialty on children in this country.

The "excuse" for doing FGM in a "modern hospital", is this:
People from cultures where it is the "norm", are going to have it done ANYway.
So, therefore, so the reasoning goes -- better to have it done in a modern, sterile, antiseptic surrounding, with modern hospital facilities available in case of "complications" or emergencies --
rather than, as is usually the case, in primitive facilities, with dirty, rusty tools, no anesthetics, and no help available in case of infection or loss of blood leading to death.

I DO NOT AGREE WITH FGM; OR WITH THIS LINE OF REASONING FOR PERFORMING IT IN HOSPITALS.
Nevertheless, you should be aware that this case HAS been made, by genuine doctors, MDs, who BELIEVE they are "doing good".
There is a certain amount of real professional, medical opinion on his side -- altho it IS a minority opinion among Medical Professionals. Not necessarily divided along "religious" lines, either!

It is probably futile; but I want to DECREASE THE AMOUNT OF VIOLENT EMOTION surrounding this issue; and bring it more into the realms of REASON. As much as possible.
As a woman, the thought of ANYone, doctor or not, taking a scalpel to MY sexual organs, is enough to make me almost lose my reason -- nevertheless, if we ACTUALLY WANT TO STAMP OUT THIS HORROR, then REASON is a far better way than violence and panic........

NOT ALL Muslims practice or advocate FGM. Many Muslims and Muslim cultures do NOT practice it; and abhor it as we do.
There are NON-MUSLIM groups who practice FGM. {Mainly from Sub-Saharan Africa; and Animists.]
There are and have been, CHRISTIAN groups, yes, I'll say that again, CHRISTIAN groups, who practiced FGM.
Christians {Copts} in Egypt used to; FGM was an age-old custom there, way before either Christianity, or Islam. I believe there are other {small} Christian groups also.

The RATIONALE, for doing it "the modern way" by a doctor in a hospital, is for the same reasons that you would want your appendix taken out by a modern surgeon in a sterile operating-room; and not by a witch-doctor in a dirt-floored hut.

There ARE SUCCESSFUL means of combating FGM. Last year's Ms. Magazine had an article on that. Look it up. It involves getting ENTIRE VILLAGES, including women, men, and Respected Elders of both sexes, to renounce the custom -- thru REASONING with them!!!! There is no other way but REASON!!!

Since this doctor clearly believes that genital mutilation of girls is good for their development, he had probably performed this mutilation while practicing medicine in USA. He should not only be fired from his job at Mayo Clinic and have his license to practice medicine revoked in USA, but also investigated for possible child abuse by performing this monstrous surgery. He undoubtedly had many requests from Muslims of his mosque in USA.

The problem with going to Muslim doctors is that they may be more loyal to their supremacist ideology of hate of non-Muslims than to Hypocrites Oath that bounds doctors NOT TO HARM his patients. Since Muslims who live in the countries where they are minority are allowed to LIE (Taqiyya) in order to save their skin and :"only true faith, We do not know whom to trust and whom not, when they apply for practicing medicine in this country. I would NOT go to ANY of them...because of this reason...unless I know them personally for many years and they had abandoned the supremacist ideology of Islam., which is incompatible with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and US Constitution.

It seems he specializes in pediatrics so he can force his abusive FGM thinking on his patients and their parents. I'm surprised and ashamed of the Mayo Clinic, a name everyone holds in high esteem, has even hired him, no less continues to allow him to practice at their hospital. He needs to be fired immediately. Female Genital Mutilation is different than what he is talking about on his website. He is saying that in Islam it is permissible to nick the clitoral hood, not cut the clitoris. Female Genital Mutation is a horrendous crime that involves removing part or the whole clitoris and sometimes sewing the vagina closed or worse. The two practices are completely different and he does not encourage people to do it. It seems that his position is to educate Muslims so they know the difference. People who are offended by the nicking the clitoral hood should also be offended by Male Circumcision and wage a campaign against Jewish Rabbi's/Doctors. Let's try to understand this in its proper light.

This abuse of female children is ILLEGAL in ALL CIVILIZED countries. This is NOT permitted in the US. I strongly suggest that US Law Enforcement authorities investigate the records of this "doctor" and see how many girls were mutilated by him. Not "If ", but HOW MANY!

He should be required to pay for their surgery to correct his butchery -- and he -- and the victims' parents -- SHOULD BE DEPORTED! The sooner we put our foot down and stamp out this abusive behavior, the better! ZERO TOLERANCE!

Needless to say, the Mayo Clinic should fire him IMMEDIATELY -- and if they assisted him with obtaining a visa for "guest medical worker", it should IMMEDIATELY be revoked!!

Change.org did not let me sign the petition, unless I opened an account with them. I am in the process of closing accounts, as I am swamped & have little time. Is there a petition on Care2 for the same thing -- fire & deport?

IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ!
I have known Dr. Elhagaly and I have personally heard what the Doctor has said about female circumcision.
His statements are being mischaracterized in the extreme
Before you sign this petition or pass on these stories, please check the facts.
You may not like muslims, but be a fair person. If you are a Christian, remember that it is a major sin to
bear false witness against an innocent person.

I have never seen the doctor behave disrespectfully with women or girls. He is extremely gentle and easy
going with children. On several occasions, he has corrected misinterpretations of Islamic law in order to
restore to women their rights.

In the community where Dr. Elhajaly teaches Islamic law, there are many immigrants from a countries
where female circumcision is practiced. These customs did not arrive in the time of Muhammad. They
went back much before that and were practiced by various religions. Today, the customs still exist in
many countries where Muslims and people of other religions live.
Some of the variations on these customs are very extreme and cause great suffering and life long
damage to the girls. I
think a lot of well intentioned people may think about signing in the spirit of protecting girls from horrific
situations, which is commendable.
But doctor elhajaly was actually acting out of the same concern.
Many of the people who practice these customs do it because of family tradition. They are taught that it's
the right thing to do. In village societies, there may be a lot of community pressure upon the family and
taboos around questioning or limiting the practice as it's always been performed.
When immigrants come to the United States, they may have a little more freedom to question and access
to get information about whether this is really a good thing.
Because they know Dr. Elhagaly and because he is a doctor, people started asking him about female
circumcision.

Because Islam encourages female (and male) chastity and because female genital mutilation purports to
encourage or enforce female chastity, many people may be confused and think that FGM comes from Islam
or that Islam endorses it. Among those muslims who grew up in an environment where tradition was very
dominant, there may be the same confusion about whether FGM is required or endorsed by Islam.

That's what Dr. Elhagaly was trying to address.
He clarified that what Islam does is set limits upon the traditional practices. Clitorectomy and removing of
the labia are forbidden. The only part that can be removed is a small piece of the clitoral hood, NOT the
clitoris. It is forbidden to remove anything but this small piece or to mutilate the genitalia.
As he stated, there are in fact punishments in Islamic law that apply to removing any other part of the
female genitalia, to the extent that some cases would be justified in the same punishment as murder.
The removal of the small piece of the clitoral hood is similar but less extensive than male circumcision
which most hospitals in the United States feel comfortable with performing.
There have been no studies showing that removal of the small part of the clitoral hood are harmful to the
girls that I am aware of. (As opposed to other parts of the genitalia.)

Dr. Elhagaly further went on to notify people that female circumcision is illegal in the West and SHOULD
NOT BE performed, even by people visiting their home countries.
He went on to warn people that in places where it is legal, even the limited female circumcision should not
be performed by anyone but a trained health care worker.

He also mentioned that even the removal of the small piece of the clitoral hood is not a REQUIREMENT in
Islam.
He could have remained silent, as many people do on this subject. As I said, there are taboos around it and
many people do not have the information to speak about what the Islamic law actually says, versus things
people do out of culture.
However, he felt compelled to clarify to help ensure that girls were not being subjected to extreme and
dangerous practices that people thought were from Islam but really weren't.

As always people unfortunately have listened to one side of the story and made a sitcom for it and got their pitch forks to go out and lynch someone. Don't we learn history to learn from it? This is no different than how the Japanese were treated after WWII or how Africans were brought to this country and made slaves. Read both sides of the story. Dr. Hatem is a practicing physician of 20+ years.

You can't pretend this isn't Islamic law without putting yourselves in danger of apostasy, which is a death sentence in this 'religion of peace and tolerance'. Well, some of us have read probably more of Islam's scriptures and writings than you have so your Taqiyya will not work anymore.

Khomeinii raves about sex with even nursing babies. He did this himself.

You may call this 'chastity' or 'moral' but I call it sickening perversion and speaking out for its victims has nothing to do with 'bearing false witness'.
