Egypt's ruling party is paying gangs of thugs to sexually assault women protesting in Cairo's Tahrir Square against President Mohamed Morsi, activists said.

They also said the Muslim Brotherhood is paying gangs to beat up men who are taking part in the latest round of protests, which followed a decree by President Morsi to give himself sweeping new powers.

It comes as the Muslim Brotherhood co-ordinated a demonstration today in support of President Mohamed Morsi, who is rushing through a constitution to try to defuse opposition fury over his newly expanded powers.

One protestor, Yasmine, told the newspaper how she had been in the square filming the demonstrations for a few hours when the crowd suddenly turned.

Before she knew what was happening, about 50 men had surrounded her and began grabbing her breasts. She said they ripped off her clothes, starting with her headscarf and for nearly an hour, indecently assaulted her with their hands.

A few men tried to help her but they were beaten away. Eventually some residents who had seen the attack from their windows came to her aid and an elderly couple pulled her into their home. She suffered internal injuries and was unable to walk for a week.

Four of Yasmine's friends were also sexually assaulted in the square that day, in the summer.

Afaf el-Sayed, a journalist and activist, told the newspaper she was assaulted by a group of men while protesting in Tahrir Square just over a month ago and she was sure her attackers were 'thugs from the Muslim Brotherhood'.

In February 2011 the correspondent for the American network CBS, Lara Logan, endured a half-hour sexual assault in Tahrir Square by a group of men. She said after the ordeal that she had been 'raped with their hands'.

While the exact frequency of these attacks is unknown, activists have reported nearly 20 attacks in the last ten days and say there has been a dramatic increase in mob sex attacks on protestors in the last year.

Most attacks take place in one particular corner of the square, at roughly the same time every evening, and usually starts with a group of men forming a human chain around women as if to protect them.

Yasmine said she was almost sure the assault was planned. She managed to throw her camera to a friend and was able to watch the footage later. She told The Times: 'Just before the attack it looks like men are getting into position. They look like they're up to something, they don't look like random protestors.'

The newspaper spoke to two men who admitted they were paid to target female protestors. Victor and Tutu, both in their thirties, said they operate in a group of around 65 local men and got paid between 10 and 20 a time. But they would not reveal who pays them.

'We're told to go out and sexually harass girls so they leave the demonstration,' Victor told The Times. He said the aim was to cause disruption and instil fear in protesters. He said members of the public sometimes joined in.

Protestors in Tahrir Square yesterday angrily vowed to bring down a draft constitution approved by allies of President Morsi.

As is so often the case in Islam, the ends justify the means. In this case, Muslim men who are supposed to have respect for women (ha ha) are raping them with their hands to intimidate them. Disgusting.

Disgusting behaviour from a gang of total cretins. I hope all the defenders of women's rights jump on this one.
Thanks Beth.

I don't doubt the information but my Moslim friends are not like that at all. If this is an attempt to create more hate and lack of understanding it's no right.

Gloria, I suspect your Muslim friends are not living in Egypt or the middle east. Powerful men are using the weak (that would be WOMEN) to terrify their opposition into submission.

"ISLAM" LITERALLY MEANS "SUBMISSION."

The Quran has many chapters which applaud the use of force to spread the faith.

These GOONS are using their holy book to suit their own objectives.

Gloria,

I suspect we ALL know nice people who are Muslim. I do. But if you don't know it, ISLAM is about hating non-Muslims and forcing them to submit in a number of unpleasant ways and or killing non-Muslims. I think it's fine that you speak up for Muslims as individuals, as they should be.

But this is about ISLAM. Islam is a violent, vicious religious POLITICAL IDEOLOGY that is causing death and mayhem all over the world, and continues to snuff out the lights of freedom as it progresses I would be happy to share with you just some of this information.

Remember, when good people do nothing about evil, they are complicit in the evil. Germans who pretended not to know what was going on in Nazi Germany were essentially part of the Nazi machinery, because they did nothing to speak out or take a stand against Nazi evil and helped create an environment where evil could continue to thrive and grow. It doesn't mean that all Germans were Nazis.

Gloria P, ask your nice Muslim friends this simple question and see what they say (they'll most likely change the subject but don't let them):

'Do you renounce Mohammed's commands that those who criticize or leave Islam should be killed along with gay people?' You'll be shocked (we hope) how many of them will not renounce these hateful teachings, among many others.

We've asked this question of every Muslim on Care2 who has come on to tell that Islam is about peace and tolerance and every one of them has refused to renounce these ugly commands of hate.

Gloria, a lot of Nazi party members were nice people too but that doesn't mean the party's ideology was not awful and there were far too many party members who did believe in all the hate it espoused. The same goes for Islam (which Hitler said was the only religion he respected). Get some knowledge. Read the Qur'an and hadith (at least Bukhari), which is something your Muslim friends most likely have never done, at least in a language they can understand. They don't even know what Islam really teaches, unfortunately.

How could anyone who knows anything about the Muslim Brotherhood, whose stated goal is 'to destroy western civilization' and force the whole world to submit to Islam's barbaric Sharia Laws?

Morsi, as the MB candidate, said during the campaign, when he thought he wasn't being recorded, that his goal was to 'reconquer Egypt for Islam and force the Coptic Christians (the original true Egyptians before Islam conquered and oppressed them) to either convert or leave', as tens of thousands have been forced to do. His actions are totally in keeping with this and the MB is all about bringing about Islamic rule - Sharia law.

Why should any half-informed person expect anything else from these primitives? Islamic authorities have already stated that women who don't cover themselves as Mohammed wanted them to (he was afraid other men would try to take his many wives just like he took theirs) then they 'deserve to be raped'.

Extremism, in All it's forms, is dangerous.
The mental landscape of extremism is barbaric. The energy that feeds extremism is fear. This exists in individuals, nations, religions, and politics. We need to be vigilant and stand up for freedom and right action wherever and whenever we can.

Gloria, women abuse in Egypt is of catastrophic proportions. Police conducted virginity checks on protesters. I don't know if you had any friends in Egyptian police who could tell you what they do.

Egyptian crowds twice attacked foreign female journalists, tore off their clothes and hit them repeatedly.

With the fall of Mubarak, Islamists are rapidly changing Egypt to another place ruled by Sharia with the corresponding treatment of women.

Let's not forget that this would not be happening had we not thrown a long-time ally under the bus. Mubarak may not have been the most benevolent of leaders, just as the Shah was not--oops, here we go again, reaping the rewards of throwing an ally under the bus for Islamists. You would think the morons in Washington would eventually get that lesson through their thick heads--and we are getting ready to whiz in the water dish in Syria next after having done so in Libya, which also isn't working out so well. Gee, do we see a pattern here?

David, I don't think there are morons in the White House. I explain Sunni Islamist takeover of the whole Middle East by actions of the Saudi lobby. This lobby is secretive, yet extremely rich, efficient and gets what Sunni Islamists want.

The whole Middle East as fallen into their hands, except for Syria and Jordan, both countries are struggling to keep Islamists at bay.
