No one can ever say that Iran is not pulling ahead in important technological fields. The man shown getting his finger cut off was charged with robbery and adultery in the city of Shiraz. He was also sentenced to three years in prison and 99 lashes.

One of Iran’s official press agencies published photos showing the public amputation of a thief's fingers on Wednesday. These show a man getting his finger chopped off with a machine resembling a rotary saw.

We contacted many of our Observers in Iran to ask them about this machine. Some of them had heard about it before, but many discovered its existence through these morbid photographs, which were reportedly taken on Thursday. According to the INSA press agency, the man shown getting his finger cut off was charged with robbery and adultery by a court in the southwestern city of Shiraz. He was also accused of being at the head of a criminal organisation. On top of losing one of his fingers, he was sentenced to three years in prison and 99 whip lashes.

No independent witnesses were able to recount the circumstances under which this amputation took place. Four photos of the scene published by the press agency were widely relayed on social media networks. Strangely enough, the man’s face did not betray any signs of suffering in the photos, though it is possible that he might have been drugged.

"Publishing these photos is a way to instil fear in the population so as to avoid any protests"

Contacted by FRANCE 24, the spokesperson for Iran Human Rights, Mahmoud Amiry-Moghaddam, who is based in Norway, explains: “What is surprising about this is that not only was this a public amputation, but that photos of it were distributed by official press agencies, and that they showed a machine that we had until yet never seen images of. We have noticed that the authorities have recently being making more and more publicity surrounding cases of corporal punishment. Every time we get closer to an election, the number of these incidents increases. And we’re getting quite close to the presidential election [slated for June]. I believe this is a strategy to instil fear in the population so as to avoid any protests.

Following the amputation, Ali Alghasi, Shiraz’s public prosecutor, announced that sentences against criminals would become increasingly severe, without explaining why.

On January 20, two thieves were hanged in public in Tehran. They had been caught thanks to video filmed by a street surveillance camera that showed them robbing a man at knifepoint. They had stolen the equivalent of 20 euros.

Why they were hanged is again unclear: Sharia prescribes amputation of the hand for theft (again, as per Qur'an 5:38. Perhaps they were repeat offenders.

Amputation, whipping, and even death by stoning are all legal forms of punishment under Iran’s Islamic penal code.

Of course, because all are prescribed for various offenses under Sharia.

Here is a recent statement from a group of Bangladeshi apostates living in the UK explaining the reasons why they have abandoned Islam:

"One who claims to be a messenger of God is expected to live a saintly life. He must not be given to lust, he must not be a sexual pervert, and he must not be a rapist, a highway robber, a war criminal, a mass murderer or an assassin. One who claims to be a messenger of God must have a superior character. He must stand above the vices of the people of his time. Yet Muhammad’s life is that of a gangster godfather. He raided merchant caravans, looted innocent people, massacred entire male populations and enslaved the women and children. He raped the women captured in war after killing their husbands and told his followers that it is okay to have sex with their captives (Qur'an 33:50). He assassinated those who criticized him and executed them when he came to power and became de facto despot of Arabia. Muhammad was bereft of human compassion. He was an obsessed man with his dreams of grandiosity and could not forgive those who stood in his way...

The statement continues,

Muhammad was a narcissist, like Hitler, Saddam or Stalin. He was astute and knew how to manipulate people, but his emotional intelligence was less evolved than that of a 6-year-old child. He simply could not feel the pain of others. He brutally massacred thousands of innocent people and pillaged their wealth. His ambitions were big and as a narcissist he honestly believed he is entitled to do as he pleased and commit all sorts of crimes and his evil deeds are justified."

Political Islam has Islam mapped out:

At least 75% of the Sira (biographies of Muhammad and quotes attributed to him) is about jihad.

The largest part of the Islamic texts (the Qur'an, hadith and sira) relate to the treatment of unbelievers, kafirs. Approximately 67% of the Qur'an written in Mecca is about the unbelievers, or politics. Of the Qur'an of Medina, 51% is devoted to the unbelievers.

Mohammed preached his religion for 13 years and garnered only 150 followers. But when he turned to politics and war, in 10 years time he became the first ruler of Arabia by averaging an event of violence every 7 weeks for 9 years. His success did not come as a religious leader, but as a political leader.

Political Islam asks: What is the real jihad? The jihad of inner spiritual struggle, or the jihad of war?

Statistical analysis of the Bukhari hadith (considered by Muslims to be the most authentic of the hadith collections) show that Muhammad repeatedly speaks of jihad. In Bukhari, 97% of the jihad references are about war, and 3% are about the inner struggle. So the statistical answer is that jihad is 97% war and 3% inner struggle.

There are 146 references to Hell in the Qur'an. Only 6% of those in Hell are there for moral failings — murder, theft, etc. The other 94% of the reasons for being in Hell are for the intellectual sin of disagreeing with Mohammed, a political crime.

Islam is no “the religion of peace”. Islam is primarily a religion of “injustice, intolerance, hatred, and violence.” The fact is, if we non-Muslims were to say about Muslims what the Qur'an says about us, we would be arrested for hate speech. The Qur'an largely preaches discrimination, death, and imposition of its dogma on everyone. Certainly some Muslims will be offended by such statements, but frankly, so what? Judaism and Christianity, the world’s two other major monotheistic religions, have had to face the harshest of scrutiny and criticism for several hundred years which continues to this day. Islam must not be granted any special privileges or be exempt from such treatment – the implications are of tremendous importance.

Noted, tweeted, tweeted, shared, read. There is no doubt that such savage behavior is used to intimidate people who disagree with the government. If there is enough fear, rebellion stops or at least is hidden and underground. Elections are in the next six months so it is time for this type of behavior and punishment.

After getting the “eebie geebies”—I honestly have no idea how to spell the word—and feeling quite repulsed, I read your comment and broke out laughing for some odd reason!

What I meant to write as a comment before running into stan b.’s comment, was that one would think that crime would be extremely low in Iran. I guess it’s one’s vanity that convinces one to believe that he or she will not get caught.

Stan, of course not, there is no such thing as rape in Islam! However, it should be an international punishment for rapists, especially paedophiles.

As so many companies are pulling out of Iran, including communications, there could be a shortage of TV programmes so hangings and finger amputations could be there for entertainment.

And, let's face it, Muslims use modern technology developed by other countries but do not appear capable of developing any themselves except methods of abuse, torture and murder. As an example, if the only reason that they buy cranes is to hang people from then there is not much hope for anything else either being built or invented.

Well, another of the great inventions of 'Islam'. This barbarian ruled land has groaned under the lash of these primitive bigots for too long. Hopefully they will one day be free. Why didn't Obama and the West/NATO do anything to help these brutalized people when they bent over backwards to help the Islamist thugs of the Muslim Brotherhood take over the so-called 'Arab Spring' revolts? They didn't do anything to help the Iranians. Oh, could it be that the Saudis don't want to help the Iranian people because they have almost all rejected Islam after 30 some years under Islamic dictatorship and ugly Sharia law? Mosque attendance in Iran has dropped to 2%. The mullahs have thought even of offering movies to get people back in the mosques. Maybe they should offer a god of love instead.

Thank you Beth. Your above comment about the ex-Muslims writing to tell why they left this religion of peace and tolerance says it all, but I fear for these brave people, as here in the UK it has been reported by Channel 4TV that thousands of ex-Muslims live in fear and hiding due to the violence against them, and the death threats for leaving Islam (the only religion to demand those who criticise it or leave it be killed, along with others).

Anyone who loves freedom and human rights should be working feverishly against this ideology of hate, but I am constantly shocked at how many people here on Care2 are quick to defend this ugly religion and condemn those of us who fight for freedom and human rights and call US 'racists' and 'haters', when it is we who are fighting against the racists and haters who follow the example and hateful teachings of Mohammed. How twisted!

Considering the GLEE with which these people conduct beheadings, stonings, amputations, etc....there will NEVER be enough criminals to satisfy their blood lust!

Stan B....I owe you a star! That's a "willy whittler" for rapists!

Noted and shared. I too was outraged by this, but like Portland, I read Stan's comment and laughed. When I read articles like this, I think how lucky we are that we can speak out against our government, enjoy our human rights, and live in a country where a practice such as this, does not exist....please don't tell me if you know that it does!

I couldn't bear to look at any photos. This is barbaric, but then so were we not so very long ago. Mutilating criminals is a terrible solution, especially when there are other options. A good dose of humiliation without physical harming would probably be effective. The pillory springs to mind, for instance, where only their pride is hurt but enough to make them think again another time.

Extreme measures indeed. Would certainly make pickpockets, gun shooters, etc. think twice (another amputation for adultry needed of course) ... just sayin'

Chicago gangs, more organized than their overseers, know the value of violence ... these are the rules and, if not followed, wake up dead.
