War between the Malian army and Islamist rebel groups wages on. However, in the early weeks of 2013, tensions between these groups and the Malian army became increasingly hostile. Since then, witnesses have reported seeing dozens of children involved in

I quote: "According to witnesses, Islamist rebel groups are targeting small, rural villages for the recruitment of young boys. Inhabitants of these rural areas typically practice a very conservative, traditional form of Islam known as Wahhabism.

The use of children as soldiers is a war crime. Right now, Fatou Bensouda, the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, is deciding whether or not to enact an investigation into war crimes committed in Mali, which includes the use of child soldiers.

Sign below to call for an immediate end to the use of child soldiers by Islamist rebel groups in Mali, and encourage the International Criminal Court to open an investigation and bring those responsible for recruiting child soldiers to justice."

This is just "business as usual" in many parts of Africa. The ICC knows it well....sorry to say.

Signed, but it is doubtful that people with this primitive mindset will care a bit. Such a shame, all these childhoods destroyed and only a lifetime of nightmares to take its place.

Noted, tweeted, read, tweeted, signed and shared. The reason they are called Extremist is they participate in extreme measures to win. A petition is not going to make a difference. Capturing them and putting the leaders on trial might make a difference. In fact, it probably would because the leaders aren't generally prepared to die and get their thousand virgins; instead they send some ignorant souls who believe their ravings to sacrifice their lives for the cause.

The Arab world has always used children in their assaults, and in combat. It's an honor to do.Consider the 7 year olds who throw rocks at Israeli soldiers - are these children stopped? Their involvement sadly only escalates as they get older.

I'm more than willing to sign but in some ways, I feel that this is such an uphill battle that will never be resolved. I'm sure if the boys had their way they'd much prefer playing soccer or something but the leaders that brain wash them have other ideas.

While I am very willing to tell Mali to stop using child soldiers, I think we should take a good look at America's use of child soldiers. We recruit our soldiers in the high schools and slide over the age of 16-18 as acceptable with permission. When are we going to stop our wars with our children?

Margery, many countries have "child" units from around 15 or 16 years, but it is more about teaching discipline. Nobody can be in a front line unless they are 18 years old.

Muslims take children from a very young age, about 3 or 4 years and teach them to be suicide bombers. They take boys from the age of 8 years and put them in a "summer camp" and teach them to fight with real guns and put them in the front line, which is a war crime. There are many, many other breaches and that is the difference.

I think, like Ann, that children should be children and we need to try to help as much as we can and if we can save one child then I think we will have accomplished something wonderful. From the Torah, "He who saves one life it is as if he has saved the world", and yes, you have saved someone's world.
