An off-duty US navy sailor wrestled a bus driver to the ground and beat him into submission after he attempted to rape her at knife point, a court heard yesterday.

Prosecutors said that she knocked the knife from his hand, broke it in two, bit him in the hand, forced him to the ground and locked him between her thighs.

The woman, 28, was on 24-hour shore leave in Dubai and was attacked as she returned to the port where she was based after a day shopping.

She had been attempting to hail a taxi after visiting shopping centre, Mall of the Emirates and a supermarket when a bus pulled up next to her

After climbing aboard she became suspicious of the drivers route. She said: ‘I noticed he did not take the main road and when I asked him he told me not to worry.

He then drove for a further 10 minutes before stopping in an area where other buses were parked and attempting to kiss her.

When she refused him he pulled the knife and threatened to rape her but she was able to subdue him.

Following the attack, which occurred on January 19 of this year, she left the bus and reported it to her commander at Port Khalid.

The driver, named as K S, from Pakistan, was arrested the next day at his home and the attending police officer said that he was intoxicated at the time.

The court ordered that the 21-year-old be examined to establish his age after he did not produce a birth certificate.

He has been charged with attempted rape, threatening to kill, assault and consuming alcohol illegally.
Having confessed to the alcohol charge, the driver claims to have been too drunk to remember what happened.

Traces of the woman’s hair and blood were found on his bus.

The case was adjourned to May 1.

Given Dubai's penchent for favoring their co-religionists I wouldn't be at all surprised if the case doesn't turn against her on technical grounds. Hate to rain on anyone's parade, but we should keep an eye on this one- she may end up in jail herself for some sort of 'adultery' or not wearing the 'right' clothing.

I am glad the young sailor was able to use her skills to defend herself and is safe.

Rahman Qureshi, she would NOT have been a victim of Islam, but a victim of a violent man who has no respect for women. Rape is not a religious crime, not a sexual crime, but a crime of violence. Do not stir the pot that needs no stirring at the best of times.

Actually Lynne/Robert, Islam teaches that it is acceptable to rape a non-Muslim woman and it is extremely common in Pakistan which is where the driver is from.

Okay, today is May 1st so hope we will hear this abusive POS is convicted. So good the hear that the lady took the matter into her own hands and too bad she didn't squeeze something else besides his head.

Goodness gracious!
Her training, certainly, came in handy. Possibly, this should be a calling card for women to try and keep themselves in fairly good shape, or better.

I'm glad this young woman was willing and able to defend herself and that the bus river was arrested. One can only hope that there will be some type of actual punishment or jail time instead of a slap on the wrist.

2nd comment - I think this story should be re-submitted under the World or Society and Culture sections where it would draw more attention to this issue.

This is what should normally happen to all rapists, plus being kicked hard in the crotch to drive the message home. The sailor should come back home in 2016 and run for POTUS!

Lynn S, Rahman Qureshi is on a one person soapbox to paint everything as a 'victim of Islam'. Rape is a disease that crosses all cultural and social barriers, it is evident in all cultures and religions and even in those with no religion whatsoever. It is a brutal crime that must be ended and for those arrested severe penalties must take place.
So very glad that the sailor took charge and defeated her adversary. Hopefully the legal system will dispense justice and not allow a rapist to get off with a mere slap on the wrist.

More military training and weapons for women. Islam forbids women this kind of training.

Dale, it is true that rape crosses all countries and cultures. Rape is an appalling crime, just under murder. Yet the victim is usually treated as the person at fault. Not true, it's the man's fault.

Unfortunately, Islam is the only religion that teaches that it is OK to rape women and girls. This includes Muslim as well as non-Muslim women and girls. It is also the only cultrue that encourages and punishes the victim and not the perpetrator. An example is the imam who calls for baby to wear burkas because the man does not have sufficient self control to not rape babies. Did you not see the girl sentenced to 100 lashes for being raped and falling pregnant? International pressure stopped that beating but another girl died after 70 lashes. In Saudi they are hung. In many other Muslim controlled countries they are stoned to death. Fortunately, this doesn't happen in non-muslim controlled countries even when the victim is treated appallingly.

Maybe all young women should have to take self-defense courses in school to prevent such awful things from happening to them too. Brave woman, indeed! Good thing she wasn't arrested for refusing to obey a superior male!!

why would any woman go alone into any of these countries in the first place? At least she was trained to defend herself, otherwise her bloodied body might have been found later, if at all.

@Ge M
If you think only Islamic cultures punish the victim and blame women for being raped, you have very selective attention. Just for a start, note the recent scandals about rape in India, which is (you did know, didn't you?) a Hindu culture, not Muslim. Then look closer to home at some "Christian" parts of the US.

@ Anthony, as you obviously don't know, there are more religions in India than just Hindus.

Actually @Anthony, I am fully aware of this and the Hindu system kills 1,000 women each year, a mere fraction of the Muslim murders. However, many of the rapes in India are Muslim and if you read my other submissions you will see why the figures are skewed.

I would also point out the Christian rapes and murders in Egpyt, Eretria, Uganda, Nigeria, in fact in any country where there are a number of Muslims and Christians. I am waiting for someone to mention those, maybe some century in a galaxy far far away.........
