Two 14 year-old cousins from the simmering hot slums of the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince, have just been escorted by police to a health centre for HIV testing.

Sending prayers to the women of the world who have experienced violence. Sending prayers to the country of Haiti in general. The lack of basics (food, shelter, education...) create an environment that
promotes violence. How terribly sad!

I wonder where all the "Charity Associations" are spending the money that is given worldwide for just the help in this country. It must be going into the pockets of the money handlers instead of the places it is meant for. There is World Vision,Care, and all the "churches" etc. Where is Habitates for Humanity? Why are these desolate people living in hovels, when around the world people are giving to change the hopelessness?
I ask this question not only for the people of Haiti but all countries, having this problem.

Lamargo.....................It is called CORRUPTION....................Into the pockets of those in power and well to do in these countries which receive massive amounts of aid in money, food and medicines.

Don't think of me as cold blooded but none of these organization will get a penny from me. The corruption is world wide and all that donated something is keeping the rich richer and the poorer. It is all very well documented in print, films and many who dare to speak of it. And we have our own little variation on corruption in New Orleans........Millions upon millions were sent there and not too many got it! Now I wonder why???????????
One can turn blue with all the donating you might do..........................But not I !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Today I began a sponsership of a child in the Congo, knowing full well that 20 cents of each dollar will go into the administration. I also know that the help I do send WILL help Ntanda, his brothers and Mommy. It will go to food, clothes and safe housing, and education, and medical care. I can now sleep better knowing that the children will be helped medically immediatly. I'm sorry you don't agree Bette, because if you were financially able to do as I have one more child would have a chance at life. With that said you have a right to your own opinion and me mine. Love and Blessing and Hugs.

Thank you Lamargo for not tearing me to shredds..............The earth is overflowing with human life and man can not possibly save them all nor should we. All this saving a child business is creating more people. If the babies make it to puberty from your donations they will create a clone of themselves!
The babies grow and nine times out of ten are illiterate, homeless, sick and starving. Mother Nature did not intend for all these people to be here I'm sure.....................Man just simply used his magnificent brain to the point we now are on the verge of anialation of everything there is............................

I work nonstop to promote trees and the animals who are on the endangered species list...........There are far fewer of them than there are of SIX BILLION people who now wander from here to there looking for a way to survive. Three fourth of these humans did not ask to be born but here we are in the technological age where pregnancy and choices can be made. But those im power will keep as many poor and illiterate as they can to hear them make the promises made and never kept because the uneducated don't know the difference of what to believe or never get educated and the pill to break free of poverty....................Those in power will see to it they never break free!

There is such a difference between the Oprahs and Tiger Woods as opposed to Idi Amin and Ray Nagin......Oprah & Tiger are doing all they can to educate the other two are busy conning, scheming and scamming those they see as literally stupid....................Tiger & Oprah and Franco Harris formerly of the Pittsburgh Steelers hopefully will make monumental changes that are so desperately needed.

In the meantime I'll stick with trees & animals.......................P.S. I do believe Idi is dead.

Plant life...................Plant trees...........................

Not to put my foot in my mouth I would if it were possible help the Native American indian. The American indian have lost everything there is to lose.................Their land, dignity and then been hidden away on reservations.

I respect them for so many reasons but mainly for their quiet dignity through all of the mistreatment the white man has dished out. But, now they are indeed coming into their own without resorting to riotous murderous behavior as seen in other groups.
Also, American and Candian art is superb..........I have posted many pictures of R.C. Gorman on many of the pages on Care2 as well as my own.
Yes the Native indian deserve so much more than they have been getting!!!!!!!!!!

PLANT LIFE.........PLANT TREES....................

yes the native peoples of the America's are deserving indeed as are all the worlds living and loving peoples who live close to the land, as they are the vulnerable ones whom through not fault of their own are paying for the excess of the euro decendants whom have been the conquerers and oppressors world wide.

Bette, I fully understand your frustration in regard to corruption and mismanagement in the NGO and humanitarian sector. And I agree that these organizations and, most of all, UN money should be monitored a lot more. There is a huge lack of transparency.
However, I believe that instead of not giving, we can research the organizations we support. Especially local organizations often do terrific work with very little resources (I really know what I'm taking about) and many projects don't cover any administrative costs let alone salaries. It seems that working for the environment, for human rights or other causes is generally considered a hobby or only valid if it's done voluntarily.
Unfortunately, our landlords still want the rent and yes, full-time activists do eat as well. I know some people in the big institutions (hello UN) earn a ridiculous amount of money, but on a grassroots level, folks surely don't become rich. We've worked in the dark and once even on the street, using some chairs of a coconut seller, we travel with our hammocks, my colleage didn't ask the neighbor for water because she was too embarrassed. This is another reality and we're not the only ones living it.
So please, don't give up hope in the social movement. Support grassroots!! Wherever you are, there are groups that do a lot with little resources. It's not possible for everyone to financially support an organization, but please don't stop believing in the work of thousands of local groups and initiatives.
Lamargo, congratulations to your decision to be a supporter of a child. I have done this when I still lived in Europe and I believe it's a wonderful way to give. I've seen some of Plan International's work in various countries and I like their participatory approach and work in the communities.

Hugs and blessings to you all!!

Julia

I gave up on the UN when the Oil for Food Scandal happened and the Chinese government is allowed to hold a security seat when it has one of the most horrible records for human rights abuse violations of it's own citizens. Then they do nothing to stop genocide in Dafur. I believe that there are good charities that provide legitimate humanitarian services, but I think the UN is corrupt. Finding the good legitimate charities and supporting those causes are the best things we can do.

I really don't think the children should be ignored because they will grow up and propagate more children. As long as the men are allowed to rape, there will be children. Sad as that sounds,it's true. Also as long as women are forced to marry there will be children. So as long as the human race continues we must become our brother's keepers or just sit back and watch as the babies wither and die. How unfeeling and inhumane is that. For shame on anyone who sees life that way, and still be a member of care2 ! ! !
