He was a skinny bear with only one arm, who could do little more than scavenge for food in order to survive. He was a common sight as he ambled along golf courses and the neighbourhood

Excerpt: "But the disabled black bear made the crucial mistake of rummaging through bins at the upscale housing community in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina.

He was a common sight as he ambled along golf courses and the neighbourhood, but finally some residents had enough - particularly when he stole two pies from a kitchen counter - and he was shot dead by the area's Wildlife Management.

Now his death in Mountain Air, about 35 miles north of Asheville, has become a flashpoint for the community - with wildlife advocates and some residents outraged at the way the disabled bear was destroyed.
Residents in the Mountain Air community first saw the injured bear in November 2011. At the time, its right front leg was still attached but appeared to be hanging by a flap of skin. It is unclear how the leg was injured.

When the bear reappeared in the spring, its leg was missing. Construction workers building a house on the development began feeding the bear because he was so skinny, said Beverly Hammond, who lives in the community." More at link.

Noted. So very sad and avoidable. They should've worked to relocate the bear or take him to a sanctuary. Thanks so much, Barbara.

Tranquillizer guns and a van ride to a more wild are a would have been the best weapons against a skinny bear. RIP dear bear.

Shame, how terribly sad - this poor animal - heartless bastards - could they not have helped him in some way. Those in their expensive little neighbourhood - I hope your bloody houses all burn down with you in it.

Chalk another one up for the Carolinas! Hoosier animal abusers that participate in every imaginable form of animal abuse! I will never be spending any money there!

I am utterly disgusted by this callous behavior....What is wrong with these people. Why couldn't they call a sanctuary, or almost better yet, call the media. They would love to do a little feature like this on their news program. Anything to help gain a little compassion (and maybe even help) for this disabled animal. RIP poor little bear.

Outrage over the fact he had lost one arm, almost guaranteed caused by humans in some way, and then sorrow that he didn't know he 'wasnnt' supposed to' eat anything from an upscale neighbourhood, plus how stupid humans can be who then shoot him. Words fail me.

Poor little bear was starving and these snobs could not show this baby one ounce of compassion. Heartless SOB's. Rest in peace you innocent cub. Humans just keep showing how cruel they can be. Come on karma work your magic.

May the same compassion shown to this little bear by uncaring humans be given to them in their time of need!

so very sad & heartbreaking that this precious soul had to struggle for survival only to be shot down. These spiteful bastards took the quick and cowardly route...he could have been rescued and placed in a sanctuary xx

How terrible that this poor bear was treated so Sounds like a typical expensive estate ( they seem to be the same worldwide) where the people suddenly become snobs or so called 2 bob millionaires and think they are somehow superior and treat animals and poorer humans with contempt and dislike anything that upsets or untidies their neighbourhoods. I hope they get their just rewards and they get the same treatment in some way in the future God bless the people who tried to feed this bear

Why did it come to this!?!? Where were concerned "community members" when they first noticed the cub was severely wounded!?!? Why is the wildlife in Carolina so utterly cheap and disposable!?!?

I AM OUTRAGED BY THIS! WHERE IS THE PETITION AND CONTACT INFORMATION!?
