Pledge to Not Travel to Canada While the Canadian Government Allows the Slaughter of Baby Seals

Animals  (tags: baby seals, AnimalCruelty, AnimalWelfare, death, killing, slaughter, suffering, wildanimals )

- 3659 days ago -
This petition is for all of those upset and horrified by the annual Canadian Seal Hunt. This year 275,000 baby seals from 12 days old to 12 weeks old will be brutally clubbed and skinned alive by Canadian fishermen who will sell their fur.

Vodka, I agree with all you are saying, we are fighting that as well!!! the 21st century should have more peace amongst people and animals all over the world!! Not just seals. But killing Seal babies is particular cold hearted and cruel!! And so totally unnecessary!

Anytime an innocent helpless creature (seal, dog, cat, etc) is brutally bludgeoned to death is a horrific act that could only be done by humans without a conscience or moral ethics and I pity those who think it is alright to do so.

I'm vegetarian and live in Canada and certainly don't support the seal hunt ... but .. signing petitions to not go to a country doesn't seem like the way .. I didn't go to US for years because of Iraq, Guantanamo, torture practices on prisoners, your prison system in general, etc. But after a while considered it not helpful to myself or others to judge a whole country because of the stupidity and cruelty of some. Communication and connection are more important than contraction and reaction.

If I signed a petition pledging to avoid every country that condones something I'm opposed to, I would have to build a boat and live in the middle of the ocean. Although I wouldn't be there long, I would starve to death bacause I don't like fish.

Louise L (9)

“This is an act of war,” said Captain Paul Watson. “The Canadian government has just sent an armed boarding party onto a Dutch registered yacht in international waters and has seized the ship. Considering that the mission of the Farley Mowat was to document evidence of cruelty by sealers to support a European initiative to ban seal products, I can predict that the Europeans will not be very pleased with this move and most likely this move by Loyola Hearn will guarantee that this bill is passed. In other words the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans has just handed us the victory that we were looking for.”

So the answer is to boycott a country and put people out of work who aren't involved in the seal hunt. If you boycott your own country do you throw yourself out? How many countries have reasons to be boycotted? Should sealers boycott boycotters?

Too many glass houses for so many that like to throw stones.

I'm thinking about boycotting USA because they're allowing sea lions to be killed. I'll definitely boycott USA when they eventually start culling the grey seals.

Lee D (22)
Sunday April 13, 2008, 8:36 am
We, the Canadian people, already dislike the USA because of illegal wars,Guantanamo, Bush, etc.etc....Tit for Tat? It's so stupid. Every country has it's own ghosts to deal with and Canada has it's annual seal hunt. It's disgusting, everyone knows, but what can we, the people, do if our governments do not listen? Around the world people have been screaming about stuff going on in their countries, and nothing is being done. The pressure on governments has to be kept up...but don't punish it's people, they are just as helpless as these seals.

Louise L (9)
Sunday April 13, 2008, 8:36 am
You're reading my mind Newfie Too...way too many stones being thrown when other countries could so easily pick them up and throw them right back...

Friends, let's try and comment constructively on this and not sink to personal tit-for-tat insults as that does nothing but muddy the already murky waters of this issue, please. And as for those who list the United States wrongs, well, you are absolutely right. There is a lot that needs correcting. Many people do protest and do boycott and try to make a difference with these issues. But as you all well know, this is a global economy and it will take a global effort to impact these industries.

Linda Gillenwater (87)
Sunday April 13, 2008, 10:09 am
Furthermore, for those who believe that since other countries do wrong, it is alright to ignore what is being done here, then I leave you with this thought...a wrong for a wrong never makes a right.

Linda Gillenwater (87)
Sunday April 13, 2008, 10:13 am
On the issue of people's jobs being impacted, that is a harder one to answer, but something, somehow has to reach the Canadian government. There are always alternatives to a solution or to a problem, but sometimes it is difficult to see without some hard work. My wish is that we could unite and HELP the world (cruelty to people, animals; hunger, joblessness; homelessness) instead of unproductive endless bickering.

I wish I could boycott the whole world LOL. I can't think of one country that isn't doing something I'm against. Basically it is the corporations and the fat-cats we all need to boycott. They're the only ones getting rich off the blood money.

Sorry but go back to that board and find where I posted invitations to come here. If you like to know I invite people of both sides to come to that board. The big problem here is that ARA's will shoot off and when someone stands up and says i don't think you're right...bang, bang, hit that flag button. Actually everyone is allowed on this site and is not here for ARA's only. Both sides are suppose to be civil as well by the way.

My family and I used to enjoy vacationing from Oregon, USA in the various different and beautiful regions of Canada. For several years now I have sent a similart letter to all the government officials in any country that seemed useful that we would never return there until this dreadful, cruel, needless, sadistic slaughter ends forever! Neither will we buy any Canadian products. And we urge all our friends to follow and many are. We will not give up! Every year more and more people are sickened by such disgust by such an otherwise civilized, friendly, and accomplished country. We must talk to everyone we meet. Bring it up in any conversation we can. Yes, we can! and we will! Courage, persistence, peace, etc. Bruce Combs

Just another one of the current hideous examples of the murders of our planet, of our inhumanity to nature, man, beasts, and the universe. Of course it is the political leaders who are most responsible for selling off our animals' habitat which also are our beautiful forests and irreplaceable old-growth timber, fresh water, our oceans and beaches; who promotes the denial of global warming while promoting our wars and laughing at torturing untried prisoners! Also please see The Pledge To Be a Planet Messenger, the most comprehensive and vital petition for our earth I've seen, and I've seen and signed a lot of them. If you haven't yet decided to sign that petition, and as many as you can, perhaps after seeing the Seal painting (SEALS: THEY HAVE NO CHILDREN!) you will feel the need to do so. And to tell others. That is my wish. There are more of these PLANET GENOCIDE paintings on the way in my site by that name (at least 3 featuring seals and over 40 altogether and still coming:

What a silly notion ...Americans wanting to boycott Canada....
This is funny as thousands of Americans will come here this summer to hunt and fish ...guess it doesn't matter if you are doing the killing right..
I am against the seal hunt also but if I was to boycott every country that did something wrong holy smokes...

To L Jenna and others, I have made it no secret that I disagree with most United States policies and boycott Kentucky Fried Chicken, McDonalds,Burger King, puppy mills and ANYTHING Bush and his cronies advocate. If I was capable of getting to Canada I would go up there and most definitely do something beside just petitions and running my mouth. I envy those who are Canadians and those who live close enough to impact the tourism industry. But I can only beg people to find a way to make a statement that will grab your government's attention because there is a solution and who else but native Canadians know the subject better? As for this war, we support our troops, NOT the war and if you have been paying attention to the news you would see the massive protests Americans wage against this war and how badly we want it to we wish it had never been engaged. But we share common problems in gathering up enough people en masse to force a change in policy. But I say it has to start with the one, I will be that one and won't stop until cruelty to any living being is stopped, wars are stopped and alternatives for people's jobs are found and implemented. For there are always alternatives if anyone is willing to think outside the box. And one last thought, just because the United States is wrong does not mean it is right to ignore a wrong being perpetuated in another country. Two wrongs do not make a right. Such an excuse is a cop out.

FYI, many, many Canadians are appalled and ashamed of the seal hunt. We are already boycotting businesses, etc., that make use of the products of the seal hunt. We're working to make our politicians aware that the hunt is unacceptable. It's really easy to sit in your Country and say 'BAN THEM ALL, THEY'RE ALL MONSTERS'. I say that it's unconstructive and is hurtful to Canadians who are working so hard to stop this. Please take a careful look at the horrible things that are being done in your own home Country and ask if you'd support a ban against it until something changes. Americans who are outraged, check out the ASPCA news and videos. Look at what we're fighting against in China, India and so many countries. Attacking all of the citizens of a country is not the answer, if anything, it makes Care2 and our petitions less effective.

Simply put guys and ladies, the governments will(and always have done)what they want to,rather the people are against it or not.Gov,t sees the bucks, not the ecology or worry about the results of their actions. We,the people(no matter what country)by persistance can make our voices heard over the bureaucratic mumbo jumbo and thus Can make them (government)sit up and take note.
