Wolves had been absent from Yellowstone National Park for more than 70 years when they were reintroduced in the 1990s – and their return had some surprising benefits.

Wolves were once the top predator in America’s world-famous Yellowstone National Park. But the population was eradicated in the 1920s, leaving the wilderness wolf-free for seven decades.

In 1995, however, wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone; this gave biologists a unique opportunity to study what happens when a top predator returns to an ecosystem.

They were brought in to manage the rising elk population, which had been overgrazing much of the park, but their effect went far beyond that. In this film, The Nature Conservancy’s lead scientist Dr M Sanjayan, Dr Valerie Kapos of the UN Environment Programme and animal behaviourist Kirsty Peake describe how the returning wolves dramatically changed the park’s rivers, forests – and the landscape itself.

Thank you for this video and thank you to the forward looking people who reintroduced wolves to Yellowstone. Those who want to kill them are lacking education in what is really good for the balance of nature. They are also the ones who nearly exterminated the wolves and bison in the first place. Their type also undoubtedly helped exterminate the passenger pigeon, Carolina parakeet Great Auk, and Dodo bird!

saw it first on BBC

its a great short view into why wolves are so important. Every official that allows wolf killing in their area needs to watch these few minutes first!!!

I remember when they reintroduced the wolves to Yellow Stone - even had a beautiful poster purchased in support of the effort. It wasn't long before the ranchers and the controversy began...some things never change. Thanks for the beautiful video - that's what it's all about!

Too bad the idiots that are bent on exterminating every wolf in existence can't see the overall harm they are doing to the environment AND to their own hunting interests. What sport is there in hunting moose or deer that are so sick and malnourished due to overpopulation that they can't even get away?
