Are Female Dogs More Intelligent Than Males?

True, dogs aren't exactly a fertile market for self-help manuals. But a new study finds that the brains of male and female canines are not the same -- and in at least one task, the females have an edge.

Really amusing Tarequl, as us females are sure to say 'YES!" to this! I think that the reality is that this test is not quite broad enough to work out the answer and there were not enough dogs tested!! having rescued loads of dogs in my life, I honesly think it is an individual thing! I have had some pretty dumb females and some VERY intelligent males! I thnk it is just like with people... Some are dumb and some of them are like ALL of us on catre 2... that is... HIGHTLY INTELLIGENT!! ( Ha! Ha!)

I've had both male and female dogs. The males were great cow dogs. But I think females are easier to train. They're more protective too.

Beautiful sheepdog picture!
Does this truly surprise anyone -- women are smarter than men and I would say that holds true with the pets I've owned over the years!

Well, we already know women are smarter than men, so why wouldn't it hold true for dogs, too?

Awhile ago, a handler who appeared on NBC's "Today Show," who trains sled dogs said that when selecting what dog to lead a team of sled dogs, the handlers don't make the selection based on the strength of the dogs. They usually try to choose the dog that's the best peacekeeper, and more often than not, it's a female.

Overall, peaceful people are smarter than those who want to engage in fighting, so it doesn't surprise me that this same truism applies to dogs!

I have two female greyhounds and 4 male yorkies and I must say the girls are better behaved, but more intelligent I don't know. Human females are most certainly the more intelligent.

We socialized our female collie from the time she was 10 weeks old. She loves people more than she loves the other dogs at the dog park, especially the males who seem to have only one thing on their minds. The males also tend to be more aggressive. I've had both male and female dogs and I would honestly say that the females have been much more loyal.

We always choose female dogs. Now there is another reason to continue to do so. :)

Even though I'm not a dog person, I'd say yes from what I've observed. They're also more mature. I also think the female of any species is the smart one, including humans. I believe women have been put down over the centuries because they ARE more intelligent than their male counterparts and therefore pose a threat. I don't refer to inventions and architecture and all that, I refer to feminine intelligence which is closer to nature--more intuitive and more in contact..

LOL Colleen, your comment reminded me of the line" you call me a bitch like it's a bad thing! ' Love that quote!
I have had male and female dogs over the years, and I'm not sure to be honest as the male dog I grew up with as a child, Mum and Dad proudly state it is one of the brightest dog's they have ever had.
Great article though!

interesting, can`t really say my girl is smarter than the boy, they were both street dogs so they`re both smart in their own way.

There is a big difference between altered male and female cats too. The males I've had are much more affectionate to humans, and the females don't get along with each other as well as the males do. The cats have to be altered though.
