N'd, Thanks Ben. I can not watch the video, the pictures already hurt my heart to much....I have signed these and more! I have been boycotting them since the first Dolphin was killed, and will continue to, untill the quit killing these kind, gentle, intelligent gifts to this Earth..so until they grow a heart and feelings and Stop slaughtering Dolphins and Whales forever....I can not think of one thing I could ever possibly want from them.

I hope we will make it this time!

In addition!

Because drift nets are used in the Mediterranean - as many as 8 000 whales and dolphins are killed annually by the activities of fishermen from various nations in the Mediterranean area.

Kit, You signed on December 28, 2009.
Your signature has been delivered to:
President Obama, Vice President Biden and Japanese Ambassador to the United States Ichiro Fujisaki

I've signed most of the petitions, and many have large numbers of signers, the problem, is as I see this, they have no effect. We would need a large contingent of the press ready to make this an on going front page issue. Then may be the government would also support these efforts.

Noted, thanks. I have signed dozens of petitions from various organizations (including those in this post) to stop the slaughter of dolphins and all marine life. Since I don't do FB, I used my hubby's account to sign and spread...not sure if I did it right or not...I don't care to get involved with FB.

Signed, noted, sent to Facebook, sent on to Facebook friends who are eco-activists. How about we get together and boycott Japanese products? This will take a concerted effort and someone willing to take on some research to find out where we can hurt them the most. Then we warn them, then we DO it. Does anyone have the time for this effort... any volunteers???

I know, it may seem absolutely hopeless, but that doesn't stop me from trying to do what I can...OK?
I also know that this is taking place elsewhere, but now the target is Japan.
Another thing to do, is sending a letter to the Embassy of Japan in Your country. Tell them what You think about this senseless killing of dolphins!

I share your outrage Ben, and had signed and commented on this petition back in April, as well any other actions I could find to take. I made myself watch the Cove, and the images haunt me. It is difficult to understand Japan's insistence on this horrible slaughter and imprisonment of these intelligent creatures who have over and over proved to be our friends. It is difficult to understand the arrogance and supposed "pride of tradition" in their continuing slaughter of whales and dolphins. I do agree with Kit; petitions aren't going to change their minds, although I will continue to sign petitions and send emails. We saw how Japan "got around" the commercial whaling ban, and I have read comments of Taiji officials; they just don't CARE how others from around the world think, and have stated that clearly. I wish I had an answer, because knowing of the slaughter of these creatures I have such respect and awe for is heartsickening.

Facts about Dolphins:
Dolphins belong to a group of mammals referred to as cetaceans (or Cetacea). The cetaceans are further broken down into two main groups, the toothed whales (or Ondontoceti) and the baleen whales (Mysticeti). Dolphins are classified as toothed whales (Ondontoceti). Other toothed whales include killer whales, pilot whales, beluga, narwhal, sperm whales, and several groups of river dolphins.

The term 'dolphin' refers to a diverse assortment of marine mammals. The term dolphin is not restricted to a single taxonomic class and therefore is an unspecific term. The groups of toothed whales whose members are often referred to as dolphins include the oceanic dolphins (Delphinidae), river dolphins (Iniidae), and the Indian river dolphins (Platanistidae). Of these groups the oceanic dolphins are by far the most diverse.

Oceanic dolphins are also referred to as 'true dolphins' and are the most diverse group of cetaceans. The species of dolphins that belong to the Family Delphinidae are referred to as 'oceanic' or 'true' dolphins. The Delphinidae group includes about 32 species and is the largest of all subgroups of the cetaceans. Species of oceanic dolphins (Delphinidae) inhabit the open ocean, though this is not a strict rule for the group (in some cases, oceanic dolphins inhabit coastal waters or riverine habitats).

Some oceanic dolphins have a prominent beak also known as a 'rostrum'. The snout of some oceanic dolphins is long and slender due to their elongated, prominent jaw bones. Within the dolphins' elongated jaw bone sits numerous conical teeth (some species have as many as 130 teeth in each jaw). Species that have prominent beaks include, for example, Common Dolphin, Bottlenose Dolphin, Atlantic Humpbacked Dolphin, Tucuxi, Long-Snouted Spinner Dolphin, and numerous others.

A dolphin's forelimbs are known as 'pectoral flippers'. The forelimbs of a dolphin are anatomically equivalent to the forelimbs of other mammals (for example, they are analogous to arms in humans). But the bones within the forelimbs of dolphins have been shortened and made more rigid by supporting connective tissue. Pectoral flippers enable dolphins to steer and modulate their speed.

Some dolphin species lack a dorsal fin. The dorsal fin of a dolphin (located on the back of the dolphin) acts like a keel when the animal swims, giving the animal directional control and stability within the water. But not all dolphins have a dorsal fin. For example, the Northern Rightwhale Dolphins and the Southern Rightwhale Dolphins lack dorsal fins.

Dolphins have a unique sense of hearing. Dolphins do not have prominent external ear openings. Their ear openings are small slits (located behind their eyes) which do not connect to the middle ear. Instead, scientists suggest that sound is conducted to the inner and middle ear by fat-lobes located within the lower jaw and by various bones within the skull.

Dolphins have excellent vision in and out of the water. When light passes from air to water, it changes speed. The creates an optical effect referred to as refraction. For dolphins, this means their eyes must correct for these differences if they are to see clearly in both conditions. Fortunately, dolphins have specially adapted lens and cornea that enable them to see clearly in and out of the water....

If we don't save these fantastic animals, what will we tell generations to come...???

I can't even stand to watch the video of the slaughter. Dolphins are as smart as any cat or dog and smarter than many people!
I signed awhile ago and have been doing my best to boycott Japanese products.

I can't imagine how they continue with it, knowing how the world feels about this issue.

For such a proud people, the Japanese are showing the dark side of their race and their politics and I cannot respect it.

I have signed all the petitions I can get my hands on with this. I can't watch video, it breaks my heart too much. The one video I did watch was on one of the links you gave Ben, the one where they speak of having a good friend, meaning the dolphin. At one place it stated that not many in Japan realize what is going on and that the meat contains toxins. I as a Mother, feel that if parents in Japan were made aware of the toxins in the meat they would not want to feed their children this and therefore it would cut down on the number of dolphins that were killed.
I think, although many of us around the world are signing things and adding pressure to Japan, if sort of falls on deaf ears if the Japanese people do not understand all of this and therefore they consume and therefore there will be those who will supply to this demand. So the Japanese must become educated to what is happening before this will start to cut back and in hopes at some point end altogether.

No I couldn't kill one of those beautiful dolphins Ben, but then I have a hard time swatting a bug. I couldn't kill these beautiful horses that are running free on this land over here in usa, yet yearly there are those people who do, I couldn't hold that job, I'd rather scrub toilets than kill an animal for a living to earn my money.

To the Japanese it is I suppose like this Country eating beef and killing cows, it is a staple in their diet. So it will take more than people just saying no no no, stop this horrible thing. It will take a swaying of the minds of all the people in Japan, a change in their culture and if it is anything like over here it will take awhile. I have seen a progress with the cigarettes, but it has been step at a time, warnings on packages, then no smoking in work then public places, non smoking hotel rooms, so on and so forth.

The information is being placed out there on what eating beef is doing, to the peoples health, to the environment in the raising of the cattle, to the factory farms, yet still the majority of people on this Continent still eat beef. When the food is embeded into the culture it takes a long time, and if the people are not even aware of a problem, then nothing much will change no matter how much others are shouting. Just my view on it.......and so, I'm afraid, many years of this insanity is still to come. Education to the masses, the Japanese, will move things along the fastest.

AS I AM QUITE CONVINCED THAT "MONEY" and "GREED" ARE THE REAL ENEMIES OF WILDLIFE!!!!!
THIS IS UNDOUBTEDLY PROVEN BY DEFORESTATION, OIL COMPANIES, LOGGING, OVERFISHING, POACHING, HUNTING etc etc............
PROBABLY IS JUST HITTING THE "POCKETS" OF A NATION'S ECONOMY THAT ALL TOGETHER WE MIGHT HAVE A RESULT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A KIND OF "EMBARGO": NOT BUYING JAPANESE PRODUCTS UNTIL THE GOVERNMENT INTERVENES TO STOP SUCH ATROCITIES!!!!!!!!!!! BUT OBVIOUSLY IF Michela STOPS BUYING JAPANESE CARS IT IS SENSELESS, BUT IF ALL ANIMAL LOVERS BOYCOTT JAPANESE PRODUCTS, PROBABLY MIGHT BE RELEVANT.........AND WE COULD BE SUCCESSFUL......

There should have been a wordlwide peacefull demonstation against this slaughter of the dolphins. For some reasons it was cancelled here in Denmark, and I haven't heard how it went in other countries. There's got to be a way to make them stop doing it. Maybe if we all stopped buying anything that comes from Japan.

The Japanese are a brutal people and culture. They proved that by the way they treated the POWs in WW 2. This is just an extension of that. They have no conscience and think that there is nothing wrong with this slaughter. Remember, this is where the UN had its pow wow to discuss the fate of the planets environment and wildlife. What a joke that was. The UN has once again showed itself to be useless and clueless. And Japan has fooled no one into believing their behavior has changed.

It was extremely painful watching the video. What is the purpose for this senseless slaughter of dolphins. Why does the Japanese Government allow such a terrible and distasteful thing. It is just disgusting and the whole world should come down heavily on them. I honestly thought that they were more civilized than this. This deliberate cruelty is just not acceptable and they should be completely ashamed of themselves. Something must be done to stop this immediately.

I swear, some people have no conscience at all! The slaughter of any living creature disgusts and repulses me. People are desensitized to the fact that the animals that they are consuming were severely tortured for their dinner meal. I just don't want to understand the human race.
Petitions signed, letters sent, posted on facebook and prayers for human remorse. TY Ben

If you want to stop the killing, quit buying Japanese cars boycott all products from Japan. Economically is the best way we can stop these murderers of Whales and dolphins. They feed the meat to school children just how does that fit into Japan's so called science study by poisoning their own people and profiting from it.

And yet another petition; there can never be too many, right...?
(Petitiononline.Com)
To: U.S. Ambassador to Japan
"This petition is intended to help save dolphins in Japan. In the documentary The Cove, it showed how the Japanese grouped dolphins into a cove of water and sold the female Bottlenose dolphins to water parks. Then all of the unwanted dolphins are taken to another cove that nobody can see. The fishermen stab them with a spear that leaves blood pouring out of the dolphins while they are still alive. Over twenty thousand dolphins are killed every year. When I get one thousand signatures, I will send them to John V. Roos, U.S. Ambassador to Japan, and ask him to file a protest with the Japanese government. The IWC (International Whaling Commission) has tried to stop the killing but the Japanese have bribed small countries to vote with them to continue the slaughter of the dolphins..."

I do though have quite a problem with the statement "The Japanese are a brutal people and culture. " A little bit of painting with a broad brush? \This comment comes from an American. If we wished to stereotype people based on their nationality and atrocities committed by their governemtn and in the light of recent developments regarding Afghanistan and Iraq, we could certainly apply the same statement to Americans.

It's incredible!! This petition gathered so many signatures in such a short time! I'm feeling a bit hopeful that so many people are already working on this outrageous act of inhumanity!! Maybe soon we will finally see the end of this insanity!!! No words can express my anger!! I am a calm person usually, and anger isn't my thing... I don't even know how to deal with it! Probably I would just jump there and try to save any dolphin I see or if I could I would tell them not to go there any more. Just leave Taiji. Forever!

Noted. Signed on March 23rd. Who do the japanese think they are fooling???!!! I may not be the brightest crayon in the box, but there is no way you can convince me that what they are doing is experimental or scientific in any way. The only thing that they are doing is being greedy. Once again, the almighty dollar seems to take over common sense. They need to open their eyes and REALLY LOOK AT WHAT THEY ARE KILLING!!!!! How could anybody kill such a thing of beauty? This is beyond me. Everytime I see this, it makes my blood boil. Is there nothing we can do to stop them?????

I gladly signed all the petitions for the dolphins. What's wrong with the Japanese people that they can't put a stop to this? It's obvious that their Government condones the slaughtering of these beautiful creatures and it's up to the people to do something. I'm sure there must be at least one Japanese person that has a heart.......or maybe not?

Aquariums must also stop taking dolphins for marine "zoos" / prisons. The demand for "show" dolphins for human entertainment is part of the reason the dolphins are rounded up. This must stop. It's criminal to keep dolphins and whales in captivity.

I LOVE dolphins (and other marine animals).
I DO NOT believe in aquariums OR zoos....it's just not right on so many levels. They were meant to be exactly where they all are.
ALL the senseless killing must stop and I will fight here and on many other sites until one day it does all stop.

You cannot change an action without FIRST changing the thought behind it.

In this case, those that support this slaughter THINK that it is a necessary and profitable action; that's why they do what they do. They are already well aware that there are people worldwide who are NOT agreeable to this slaughter; this seems to have only pushed the activity behind more secrecy. That's not good at all, as it doesn't address and correct the ROOT of the problem.

Therefore, work must be done to CHANGE the THINKING that supports the slaughter.

I want to see education that challenges and changes thinking. Education that provides solid PROOF that the dolphin slaughter is NOT necessary and NOT profitable to those who support it. Education that also addresses and illustrates Reverence For Life. This committed educative effort has to be clearly presented and reach the widest audience possible, including those that try to hide from it. To convince the supporters that they have nothing to lose but everything to gain by turning away from the slaughter activity, all information would be best received if delivered with progressive DO NO HARM alternatives that will both motivate and REWARD change; i.e. options that will easily replace the dolphin slaughter's perceived "benefits".

Surely we humans, as inventive as we are, can come up with an impressive collection of non-harming paid services and activities that bring in profits and would thus extinguish, once and for all, both the desire and actions taken to slaughter dolphins for blood money. Indeed, I believe they already exist and are just waiting to be recognized...

That this ongoing barbaric, archaic slaughter hasn't garnered enough international attention and outrage to end it is beyond infuriating. Our out of control greed, ignorance, apathy and delusions of self-entitlement will undoubtedly lead to our demise, and it is truly unfortunate and speaks volumes of our lapse in intellectual evolution that we insist on taking as many innocents as possible along with us.

noted and signed, but i am skeptical. I want the killing to stop, but I don't think that begging and pleading are the way to do it. We need far more signatures and how about sending the petition to the United Nations. Isn't this their job? Finally, why would Japan continue to kill dolphins like this? If we want to convince them to stop, maybe we need to understand what they are dong and why before we can convince them to stop. I hope this works, if not, i still have more ideas.

Asians are relentless in their plunder of the oceans - hunting to near extinction of dolphins, whales, seahorses, sea cucumbers, shark fins - to say nothing of taking bear bile, tiger parts, pangolins - they eat anything that moves, lives and breathes - thinking it will benefit them healthwise medicinally and as aphrodisiacs.
Time for all countries to say 'NO MORE' - sanction trading with them. This will benefit us westernised countries who will then have to fall upon our own resources, create jobs making products that we used to make ourselves-then the Global economy will experience an upturn and who knows - back to the 'way we were'!!!!

I have just noted Margaret Mayers comment. We really MUST be careful of what we say in our comments. A comment such a the one about ' the Japanese are a cruel nation, is so offensive to anyone in Japan who is fighting to stop animal cruelty. Many Japanese peole are just as animal loving as we are! People are always saying to me what a cruel nation the Spanish are... but look at the wonderful people there that are so against bullfighting and animal cruelty I see their comments on Care 2. The world will never find peace whilst people are putting people in little boxes. There are good and bad in all races of people. There are wonderful Iranians and wonderful Muslims and wonderful gays.... oh.... all of the other groups that come in for a lot of persecution.... even women!!

Allan Y. wrote:
"I'm just so disgusted by the Japanese and their seeming lack of caring about ocean animals."

I feel disgust at the way people (in general) look upon fish, with evidenced "lack of caring". What do people have against fish? The fishing industry, both wild-caught and farmed, is brutal to these creatures. While killing fish is bad enough, dolphins and other animal species are caught as fishing "by-catches". There aren't numbers available that can accurately show how many sea creatures die by human hands in a year, but I can assure you the number is mind-blowing. Fish are sensitive animals also. The denial about this must stop. Why call out against the murder of one ocean animal and not the others?

IMO, it makes more whole sense if we would STOP killing animals altogether for our own profit and assumed "needs". Animal exploitation reaches all corners of the world and is getting uglier by the minute. We have the knowledge and ability that allows us to implement a far more sustainable system utilizing plant foods, for food, clothing, medicine, shelter, etc.; all of which could meet our every (true) need. The sooner we wake up to that fact, the sooner the killings will STOP.

CHANGE the heart. CHANGE the mind. CHANGE the behavior. Three simple steps we can all start taking TODAY.

The citizens in Taipa (sp?) are not aware of the actual slaughter since they are prevented from watching. The film, the Cove, showed that after the council people learned the fish which is loaded with mercury and unfit to eat was being served to their school children in Japan, prevented this in their town. If the people in that city which has a museum that values dolphins and attracts visitors because of the dolphins knew of this bloody slaughter they would likely protest en masse.
I have seen one petition with nearly two million signatures, but the greedy do not care what the world thinks. They do not see any value but money and do not see the dolphins as a higher form of intellectual life. It is absolutely a crime against all people since the dolphins swim in the ocean and they sabotage them into their cove to kill against the worlds opinion. The dolphins do not belong to them but to the people of the world. Boycotting Japan's products with the clear reason because of their killing whales and dolphins and over fishing will have impact, and is what must be done.
Having watched The Cove and cried during the killing, I could not watch it again. It is etched in my mind, especially the one which tried to get the people on shore to help it, trying to swim toward them as it was bleeding to death in obvious horrific pain. It did not get far before it drowned. My heart still aches for that dolphin as well as all of the slaughtered dolphins.
Is their a radio free Japan or an independent television station in Japan that broadcasts in that region? If so, the Cove should be shown on it for all the citizens of this city to watch. Imagine Japans airwaves controlled as much of ours and preference given to money over values.

Judith P., your words are truth and therefore beautiful.
Thank you for sharing your heart's distress.

I have no doubt that THE COVE is THE film that will make the biggest impact on the widest audience. Rather than spending dollars on Japanese products that support the dolphin slaughters, we can put that money into helping to spread THE COVE's urgent message, informing as many people as possible about the horrific dolphin slaughter.

As they say in the Cove, the Japanese government is recruiting poorer countries to support the lift of the whaling ban…and they’re succeeding. I still don’t get it, after all that has been done and SHOWN – and in a very comprehensive and professional way in The Cove- plus, considering the fact that stocks of dolphins (and whales) are FAR from replenished and the international outcry it generates, I still don’t get it why it hasn’t been stopped yet! Impact on Japanese economy? Very little information is available about the economic impact that whaling, or a permanent ban on whaling, would have on the Japanese economy. From What I found, whaling accounts for some 0.0015 per cent of the national economy which does not seem like percentage that could get Japan under. Plus, by their dolphin slaughter practices, they’re tarnishing the country’s image which in turn may result in boycotting their products which is certainly not helping the economy.
Also, we need to realize that in addition to slaughtering for food, there is BIG money in selling dolphins to dolphinariums (both private and public) around the world and in this respect we are all responsible (our countries that allow it and our citizens visiting dolphinariums by hundreds of thousands). Thus, we must not only sign petitions to stop killing dolphins but also be responsible enough and start banning new dolphins in dolphinariums around the world.

It is a shame and an disgrace and I will keep on signing every petition against this horor. But do you realise that we are killing these same dolfins but slowly? As we poison their habitat with plastics! So every plastic item you buy can end up in the stomac of these dolphins or other sea animals.
