Mandela quotes:
"I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.
Only free men can negotiate; prisoners cannot enter into contracts. Your freedom and mine cannot be separated.
I detest racialism, because I regard it as a barbaric thing, whether it comes from a black man or a white man.
There is no such thing as part freedom.

Nelson Mandela on freedom, 1961:
"Those who are voteless cannot be expected to continue paying taxes to a government which is not responsible to them. People who live in poverty and starvation cannot be expected to pay exorbitant house rents to the government and local authorities. We furnish the sinews of agriculture and industry. We produce the work of the gold mines, the diamonds and the coal, of the farms and industry, in return for miserable wages. Why should we continue enriching those who steal the products of our sweat and blood? Those who exploit us and refuse us the right to organise trade unions?..."

He certainly is a one-off. Gandi, MLK, Mandela?... Mandela! - I don't think our Nobel Peace Prize recipient will be as well remembered?

Happy Birthday Mr. Mandela!

This man is both a National all the world wishes they could claim as their own...
I cannot begin to think how this world would still be were he never in it.
His birthday should be a global holiday of celebration and reflection, as well as a day of action. Thanks Ben ♥

He is truely a great man !!
Soon after released from the prison he came to Japan and there was a big event welcoming him. I was there, such a memorable and proud day...not that I met him in person, but I'd been supporting ANC and anti-Apartheid activities for some time then, so being only some meters from him was enough !!
